Max is born oct 19th 2012 so he's not even 3 mos. but he is starting to bite us and everything he can get near. How can we tell the difference between teething biting and bad dog biting? Should we be reprimanding him? Also he's got dried tears on the bridge of his nose that are very hard to clean, even gentle scrubbing with puppy tear free shampoo doesn't work. When his fur dries the dried tears are back. I've been advised not to give him any more full on baths. The last one we gave him he was shaking so much and so scared. Even though I had him wrapped in a towel and was hugging him. But if I had my way I'd be bathing him more. The little guy is a little stinkier than we'd like. |
Hi! Don't let him bite. Firmly tell him no and give him something else to chew on. My little Maggie likes to play bite but every time she does it we tell her no. If she keeps it up we stop playing with her and walk away. We also stop her from biting her brother Bogey when she starts getting too rough. They don't know any better and just need to be taught. It's worse the earlier they leave their mom and siblings. That's why everyone on here is so adamant about not bringing them home until 12 weeks. I'm not sure about the tear stains. I've heard it can be from allergies. Hopefully someone else can help you on that one. |
Never let him bite your fingers. If he tries to play with or chew on your hand or fingers tell him no and replace your hand with a chew toy or something he should chew on. Sounds like you have a lot of tearing going on. Try wiping the eye area with a wet cloth a couple of times a day to clean the area of tears. Maybe try to get some of the hair out of the eyes. When the eye area is always wet from tears red yeast starts to form and it stains the area and it gets very goopy. |
When he is biting or chewing on something, gently say "no, no, no", then immediately give him a toy or something of his he can bite or chew on. He will eventually learn what is ok and not ok. During his first year, when he goes through different stages of his growing personality and teething, losing puppy teeth, etc., you will have to constantly reinforce this. It's normal, just if you stay on it and don't let the bad habits start, it pays off for a lifetime. Just like housebreaking. Lots of work for several months and then a lifetime of rewards. |
An old toothbrush comes in handy with bathing. An kver production of eye boogies is often a sign of allergies, and most dogs get allergebs from their food. I prefer grain free low allrgen kibbles (: kibbke as in dry dood not a specific brand). Play biting is nornal for puppies, and so is chewing. You got some great advice on how to deal with it, the most important thing is to remember you are setting the stage for life long behavior, nonagressively be consistent about not allowing it. Constantly giving a toy for chewing biting is super helpful! Puplies are like like infants toddlers in fast forward... |
