Update: Heart Broken, introducing new puppy Hello, My female yorkie and bijon/yorkie puppy are doing much better, I used most of your suggestions and them have been working, I thank you all. My next issue: My 2 year old yorkie female is now trying to eat my male puppy's food. I hear puppy food is not good for adult dogs, would it be ok to mix puppy and adult food, let them both eat out of the same bowl? |
I had this same problem....drove me crazy...in the end I tried everything, once the puppy reached 1 I fed them both the same food....the only thing you can do is sit there while they eat and referee...sorry, that's all I got! |

The only thing I can think of is feed them separately. I had the opposite problem..my puppy wants to eat her older brother's dog food. With them, I can just pick his up off the floor - he's big and can reach it and she can't. As for it puppy food will hurt the adult dog, I would ask my vet. I don't think it will except may make them tend to gain more weight..? |
I feed the puppy hard puppy food and the adult I feed her Merrick hard adult food. |
Buy an "all life stages" dog food and it will be much easier. Zachary will be 1 February 7 so everyone will eat the same thing. We don't free feed but supervise their meals so we don't have a problem with one eating the others food (unless they sneak in and steal some). Louise and Zachary |
The puppy does need the extra that is in a puppy food until it is done growing. If you can't separate them to feed them then you might try changing the food. It's just such a slow process having to change a puppy or an adult over to another food....it is not a quick fix. |
I have been feeding them separately, so I will continue and make sure they don't get into each others food. Thx |
Can anyone recommend a small breed all stages hard dog food? I may feed the same food to both dogs. |
I feed Taste of the Wild to all of mine including puppies. |
I read that is a good choice, are the kibbles small enough for toy dogs ? |
I have 7 dogs and 4 pups who gobble it up. No problem. If you want a smaller size...they do offer a puppy formula and the only difference is the size of the pieces. |
I fed a puppy and a 13 year old all life stages food -- Nature's Variety. The puppy had no problem eating it when she weighed 2 lbs. There are many good brands out there that are all life stages, a puppy just eats a larger serving. |
Oh boy do I know about this problem! I have 4 adults of my own and 2 puppies right now. why is it that everyone wants what someone else has??? The puppies want the adult food, the adults want the puppy food... and I also feed raw and when they all get the same thing, they still want to trade bowls. I have different bowls depending on which dog it is and how much they eat and whether they need to lose weight or are just right or need to gain weight so it's really important that Libby eats her dish (she's a little small and not chunky but will be if she gains anymore) and that Piper (who is underweight) eats her dish. I'm always juggling. The adults are pretty good, I put their dish in front of them and say their name so they get it as long as I am right there to watch. If I leave the room then all bets are off... |
I have the same problem. Ole Spud eats adult senior food and JoJo eats adult. I feed them both at the same time and separate their food dishes. I patrol them as they eat and watch carefully for one dog trying to gobble the others food up. You need to give each dog what they require so separate them and just sit there and keep an eye on them. |
