Help, have used bitter apple and hot sauce Amy seems to like chewing up our carpet in the main part of the house and bringing us a strand of it in her mouth. Granted the carpet is old and we are going to get wood flooring next year in the summer but don't want her bringing all the carpet to us in the mean time. I have tried spraying the bitter apple and even putting hot sauce on it. She doesn't like either one but keeps on chewing in those same spots but even more. Afraid she is beginning to like hot sauce. Do you have any other suggestions for me to try? I have even swapped her little butt (not hard) and she thinks it is a game. Help Please |
There might be something in the fibers or in the padding underneath in that spot. Try getting an enzymatic cleaner and clean the spot. Also, if possible, try putting something in that spot for a while..like a small piece of furniture or something that wouldn't allow her access to it. |
Try sprinkling black pepper in that area. Heard that dogs don't like pepper. |
Yep, Harry got addicted to Bitter Apple too.... I have read on here (I think!) that men's stick deodorant is another deterrant - I haven't tried it so not sure if it works :) Harry grew out of that phase all of a sudden. I always found distraction to be the best cure (as with skin kids) - try offering a nylabone or bullystick for chewing on instead? Good luck! Sally + Harry x |
Walmart has a NO spray and its bitter cherry and its horrendous, far worse than the apple...trust me:D they also have a spray to keep them off furniture etc....I spray on my rugs...you must get the indoor safe for pets variety... |
Thanks for some great ideas. Will try black pepper today and visit Walmart after Christmas. |
I'd start by throwing away the hot sauce. Not good. Bitter aapple is fine, but if it doesn't work, it doesn'twork. No pepper. That's a stomach ache waitingto happen. Hitting will only make her fear your hand later on. ?blockoff the area or train her to notenter the area or (if not a young pup) talk to your vet about a possible anxiety problem. We have a carpet fiber eater here. For him it is anxiety and no amountof telling hom no" worked. He now takes Prozac for his safety and our sanity. It works very well. |
Still chewing....I had the same problem with the Apple Bitter so I purchased the Walmart Brand called Out Bitter Cherry 32 ozs for $6.50..... Again same problem Chloe would still chew.... I asked the salesperson at Petsmart what the problem was and they told me both types have to be just sprayed on and be wet because as soon the area dries it doesn't have a good effect . So as soon as you see her chewing respray the area.... It may take a few times but after awhile she will stop chewing at that spot. It worked for me. |
Moki drinks bitter apple and loves hot sauce. IME they are bored or need something better to chew on? Supervised chewing of bully sticks , antler something. And maybe just baby gate the room untill you get the carpet removed. |
Make sure she has things to chew on and block off the area or keep her in a playpen. You can always try a squirt bottle with water and way no and squirt her when she starts doing it. |
I would suggest staying away from putting any more hot substances on the rug. If your dog decides it want the rug more than it minds the pepper or whatever you could end up with a sick pet. Only use pet safe substances. I have found that giving the dog something it likes to chew will stop the destructive chewing. Blocking off the area is a good idea as well. |
