Random Freak out: Expensive Little Cuties As u all no by now, I'm gettin my little man nxt month so I'm preparing now. I picked his necessities according to a checklist and added up all of the things he would need...can u believe If I'd bought it all today, I'd b spending $850?!!!! I was shocked cuz it didn't seem like I picked that much stuff...im the type that likes the best of the best but for $850!!!!!!!...def gotta go edit my list! |
LOL! Yes...I think going over that list is a good idea! If you check around, you can usually find better deals...and with Christmas soon behind us, there should be really good sales. Congrats on your new baby! |
Wait until you get all the puppy shots/puppy wellness visits plus heart worm preventive and flea and tick preventive. Getting and owning a puppy and dog is not cheap. |
I know I told you that your list is probably accurate, but $850..no way. Yes for vet care. No for the necessities. I'd like to see this list. lol My yorkie is 11 and (not counting food/treats) we haven't spent that muh on her stuff in all this time! Vet bills though..those are fun. |
Lol I think it's my fault...I had a hard time picking a bed, crate, and carrier. The bed is 74, crate is 139, and carrier is 80 (I'm in army so need a good one for traveling) then I tried to get the automatic feeder and fountain because sometimes when I'm training, I dnt get lunch breaks to come home and feed, change water etc. then the advantix and nutra cal i was told to get isnt cheap. Im sure the things on the list r important...its jus the specific items I chose! |
Plus I'm in Germany and their prices r higher than outs so u either buy stuff on economy that is higher or shop online and usually have a higher shipping cost...ugh. Online stores need to impose a military discount for overseas service members...I think I should start a petition or go on strike or something lol |
That's a lot of money. Upfront costs can be heavy but $850 is too much. Save this money for shots and vet bills! Also, have you considered using a playpen instead of crate? We got our puppy at 12 weeks old and both of us work 9+ each day. Play pen was our savior. We leave our Milana with bed, toys, food, and pee pad in her play pen, and she is doing fine. She can play, eat, and potty whenever she needs to; plus she is in confined area, so we don't have to worry about her pottying on carpet and damaging furniture. By the way, some will disagree about leaving a puppy for 9+ hours by herself, but for most people these days it's unrealistic to have it otherwise. Our puppy does fine by being alone during that time, and we give her a lot of attention in the evenings. |
That is an excellent idea that I didn't even consider so thx so much!!! Hopefully it'll work for my little one as well and I agree....sometimes u gotta do wat u gotta do...at least u still making sure your fur baby is taken care of! |
The x-pen is a really good idea especially if you are away from home for hours at a time. You can wait on the crate if you do go with the x-pen. You do have to consider your vet costs. Maybe buy what you know you need right now and hold off on some of the other things and buy them one by one. The watering thing is a good idea but a little pup isn't going to be able to use one. Same with the automatic feeder. A little pup is just going to need some small saucers for now. A bed, potty pads and a couple of dishes are basic for an x-pen. You probably want a small harness and leash to take the pup outside. I really think that time and training are the biggest investment that most pups need. Well, lots of love also. You can get a small inexpensive crate to take the pup to the vet for now and get a better carrier or car seat when your baby is bigger and you know just what you need or want. If you don't know for sure how big your puppy will mature at (and most people do not) then wait on some of the more expensive items. I see tons of things on ebay being sold by people whose pets out grew them. |
Ok thx YT...saved me lots of money! |
Oh no!! I have a very bad yorkie "habit" she is my empty nest baby and I do love to dress her and have the nice harnesses etc.... I do overdo it often:rolleyes: |

I would invest in an ExPen because that will also be a safe place to place your puppy when your attention cannot be on him 10000000%. I'm sure your DD is "fine" with animals but a Yorkie pup weighs only ounces to a few pounds at most and is at a great risk of receiving broken limbs or even death from an over zealous hug that turns into a trip that in turn.....well, the outcomes are varied but the pup is usually on the losing end of that proposition :( |
Yes I have a play pen and thx for showing me how helpful a x-pen would b. it sounds like a life saver for me!! |
I think its awesome that you are planning ahead for all these things by making a list of necessary items. We used to be stationed in Germany, what part are you in? |
Thx and I'm in Grafenwoehr...where were u stationed? |
Yeah, $850 is pretty expensive without vet bills included. I think in Mandie's first 6 months (including vet bills), I spent around that much..maybe $1000. With things costing more in Germany and shipping there if you are getting them overseas...i could see spending a pretty penny. Fortunately, everyone says that the 1st year is the most expensive usually. :) |
We were in Fulda before that base closed, also Berlin when the wall was up, and near Mainz Germany. My dad was military. We lived in Germany six years and Holland for 3.. |
O wow...did u like it here? |

Well I was younger, but I really enjoyed it because it is an experience I would have never gotten otherwise. I truly loved traveling and I miss it sooo much..How do you like it there? |
Babies are expensive! I have a roommate that I rent a room half off to (300 dollars for a 600 dollar a month room), just so she will help walk and look after my herd. $300 x 12 = $3600 a year. I do it because I want them looked after. Add to that vet bills, food, toys clothes and so on...... I wish I found a cheaper hobby! But Yorkie love is priceless. |
I was really cheap when I first got Joel, lol. I figured to be cheap in the beginning and I'll have his whole life to spend money on him:) My brother gave me his dogs extra crate and I made him his playpen out of these http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...L__SL1500_.jpg Just that stuff left me alot more money to buy him clothes and other fun stuff, but if I could do it over again, I wouldn't have bought him clothes until much later since he barely wore them and grew out of it so fast, lol |
