It just keeps on..... Please be careful - most of you guys know Cali's miracle story. Seems like the only thing that is a sure thing is a covered run or cabana. I did string clear fishing line and put ribbons on them - put them about 12" apart. Neighbors thought I had lost my mind! A tree branch took most of them down the other day. They went from the garage eve to dowels I stuck up in the chain link fence. The hawks ( only seen one at a time) still sit up high and watch her, but no swoops. Of course, I am always out there with her and carry one of those large fan shaped rakes. The fine here is $10,000 and can have some jail time added on. It is an International Migratory law I understand from the Fish & wildlife folks. Be safe ! |

Some people say it is fake but the station said they checked it out and believed it to be real It is becoming more difficult for hunting birds to find places to find food. It seems there are more attacks in places that are populated by people. I live in a rural area and we don't have attacks. Probably because there are plenty of things for them to hunt for here. |
Those hawks are no joke and will scoop your dog up with no problem. Can you purchase a large exercise pen with a cover to help protect your fur baby? The hawks seem set on it being hunting season. |

The eagle video looks so real for sure. It scared me when I first saw it. But the major new stations said it was a hoax and the students that did it also admitted it was fake. If you go in very slow mo, you can see that the wings disappear sometimes while the child is moving. http://www.theprovince.com/technolog...792/story.html Also, there is no way an eagle could pick that much weight up..even for a little bit. Now, a dog is different - even if the dog is too much weight to carry off, they can carry them a little bit and then drop them. |

Oh yeah. They definitely will attack and try all they can. This is why I am on a mission to make my yard the least appealing yard around to them. *sigh* |
I posted couple months back that there was a hawk (red shinned) that landed on our patio railing. The fur butts were along the patio door (which was open, but the screen door was closed) getting some sun. It scared the cr*p out of me & I rushed toward it to scare it away. I didn't know this then, but there were a pair of pigeons that were roosting on the den window which is to the left side. The hawk was after those pigeons! Since then we put up bird x thingies on the window ledge, no more pigeons & I haven't seen any hawks lately. Could it be hovering over your yard bc there might also be some birds/nests around the trees? |
I had to take down my bird feeders to discourage the hawks from hanging around. |
Birds nests and squirrel nests are all over here. I'm sure they hang around because of that. But I sure didn't like the way it circled right over my head. We have birds and squirrels like crazy and it just keeps the owls and hawks around...just don't want Mandie being the 'slowest' thing so she's the one who gets got. :/ |
Uggghhh!!! Was just out back with the pups. I'm always on the look out. Mandie had on her orange vest. It was time for us to go in, so I went to the back door to call them (at all other times, I am IN the yard around and on top of Mandie). Mandie was right by the house but still in the yard (maybe a foot away from the stoop). I look towards her again to call her and Shel and I see this HUGE SHADOW. Look up and there it is. SUPER LOW...like lower than the tree tops but higher than the roof. I ran out and waved my arms and yelled at it - which of course made Mandie think it was a game so she was playing "keep away" with herself from me. Luckily, Shelby came running to play too and he saw the hawk and went nuts barking at it. I said the magic word "Treat!" and was able to rally the girl inside. She is now happily and unknowingly eating her carrot stick. Again, I think they are beautiful birds..I just hate being scared in my own backyard. And, am thinking, they are wise the vest now...... |
I have been on a few homesteading sites, as I will be buying my land, and building a small farm in the next few years. There is a saying I have picked up on those sites.. I'm not suggesting anything, I'm just passing along something I have learned. The saying is S.S.S. That stands for Shoot. Shovel. Shut-up. |
