I use a harness 100% of the time. Their necks are so small to be yanked on with a leash and collar around their neck. Harness are so much better. |
You've gotten your answers - and I agree to harness always (collar only for tags) and jacket or sweater if it gets really cold where you are since they only have hair - no undercoat/fur. I wanted to say congrats on your upcoming pup coming home. So exciting!! :) |
harness... I currently have a mini schnauzer, and use a harness on him, I only use the collar for id tags only... |
So it's ok to use a collar then as long as it isn't for the leash...just the ID tag? It won't damage anything as long as I'm not pulling or using for walking purposes? |

Breakaway collars?...wow...I have so much to learn!!! Thanks YT!! |
And, I would definitely keep the collar with tags on at all times. A few months ago, a YT member lost her dog when he was let out by a hotel staff member. The dog was in the bathroom. Almost exactly THREE WEEKS later, her dog was found and she was notified...they knew he was hers because he had his collar with ID tags on. Good thing she had his collar on him even when he was in the hotel room and not just out and about. That taught me a big lesson for sure! |
Most cat collars are break away because cats tend to wander and get into tight spots. I feel much safer with a cat collar on Gracie. She likes to follow my cats around the house and will try to go under the furniture with them. She has long hair so I have to make sure I comb her at least once daily to keep the hair from tangling around the collar. I would comb her anyway because of the length of her hair. They are very fast little animals. It is wise to have an ID tag on at all times. A microchip is a good idea also. |
Is it painful for them to insert a microchip? |
Most people get it done when their pup is under anesthesia for spay/neuter so no pain at all with it :) |
(*sigh of relief) I'm not getting him fixed because I may want to breed depending on how this work out but as long as he won't feel pain, I'll do it...thx |
To me, harnesses are not optional for yorkies. Yorkies have delicate tracheas and walking them on a collar can damage them. I would suggest getting an inexpensive harness to start out with and once your pup is full grown, invest in a leather Buddy Belt. They are great and come in lots of cute colors :) As for breeding, you are going to get a lot of heck for wanting to breed. I would definitely suggest that you neuter your pup if you want a healthy pet. A male that has been bred before will mark, hump and search for females. They are more likely to attempt to run away because they can smell females in heat in the area. To me, it's not worth it to have an unneutered male in my home. My male is a family member to me... Not a breeding machine. |
I had Gracie microchipped when she was spayed. Some people have it done during office visits. It is basically an injection so, no, it's not any more painful than an injection. |
O ok cool. And I dnt mean breed for sale. I might get a female as well cuz my sis wants one and they will surely make babies if I do but I dnt no if I will or not. |

oh no... you just opened a totaly different kettle of fish  Many dog lovers are very very careful about breeding small dogs. so much can go wrong... please do a lot of research before you do and before you really decide to breed. To be honest, I wanted to breed my little Remy also... but she was going to be under 5lbs which is soooo dangerious and I just would not do anything that could casue her life!!! After much research I changed my mind and had her altered. Good luck to you! |
