Language Barrier I am currently stationed in Germany and am buying a Yorkie from a German breeder. I told him I'd like a puppy that is over 10 weeks and out of the stage that I was told most puppies need their moms but I am worried about the language barrier. If this puppy is used to bein spoken to in German, will there be problems since I speak English? |
no, at that young age retraining in English should not be a problem. Welcome to YT. |
Thx! I sure hope not. That was one of my reasons for getting a young puppy. My first reply...how exciting!! |

We got Lili when she was 9 months old. She didn't have a problem with us speaking English, to her. Sylvester was 12 weeks old, when we got him, we had no problem speaking to him. Now he doesn't like being spoken to in Magyar. Our groomer has to speak to him in English. Lili is happy being spoken to in both languages. |
A puppy at 12 weeks does not know a language yet. They understand tones of voice but it takes a lot of repetition for a dog to learn words. You really want to make sure your puppy is being socialized properly in the weeks after it is weaned. |
Bailey was raised by an Hispanic family. We got him when he was about 6 months old. Other than his love of tacos, he understand English fine. (Ok I'm just joking about the tacos!) |
Hahaha!! This is hilarious!! I joke that Kaji is now fully Mexican because he loves beans. :p OP, my Kaji baby was born in raised in Missouri where I imagine everyone spoke English to him. He came to Cali to live with his forever family (me ;)) who happens to be Hispanic. Kaji knows commands in both Spanish and English and knows the words for many food items in both languages. These are smart little babies. They pick up everything super quick. Did I mention Kaji was a year old? It really doesn't matter. We have little geniuses that learn to adapt quickly. Especially when it comes to food!!!!:p |
