adding a puppy I have a question, but I think it needs a little back story.. My sister lives in Cali with my "nephew" (the chorkie), and is looking to come back to Florida (YAY!!). We were going to let her stay with us until she gets on her feet, and figures out what shes doing (only 18, so it might be an extended stay). We both were talking and both of us want to add girls to our families..she wants a girl biewer, and I want a girl standard yorkie. After moving here and introducing our current dogs, would it be a bad idea to add 2 new puppies to the mix? I know it seems like a lot of animals but we grew up with many, many animals of all kinds. We wouldnt be adding them right away, maybe a couple months after she gets back (middle of 2013). |
An 18 year old girl has many changes ahead of her in life. She may stay with you for a while but what then? I would discourage someone who does not have a definite plan for their life from getting another dog. It is not fair to the dog. They are a big expense and deserve a stable home. |
Just make sure you are willing to take the dog in case she decides to move on and realizes a dog is a lot of responsibility. |
She already has a dog. And she takes care of him and has moved across the country with him. |
I would let everyone get settled in and see how things are going with the two you have. Give it some time and see if you think it's time to add 2 more. I think there can be pluses and minuses to doing it. Without knowing your sister and your situation, I wouldn't even try to tell you if you should or shouldn't. You'll know if it's doable or not but I strongly suggest giving it some time to know that (like, don't go get 2 dogs a month after she's there..give it a few months). I do agree with the above statement about being ready to take on all the dogs yourself if needed. Not because your sister doesn't take care of her dog...I'm sure she's an awesome mom. But because unforeseen things really do arize after the age of 18. Heck, I had to leave my baby dawg with my mom for a few months at the age of 30 because of divorce/move to new state/new job. |
I think waiting is a smart move. Let your current dogs get settled (sometimes it can take a year, so the longer you wait, the better). I think this is especially important for your sister's dog. Poor thing is in a whole new place. Luckily his mommy is still with him, but it's still a new switch. To be honest, if this was me, I wouldn't get a new dog until I had my own place. I don't know how it is there, but here some apartment complexes only allow 1 pet or 1 dog. Let her get established (working) and then consider bringing in a new baby. As for you getting a little girl, do you guys want the girls to be the same age? Because you can go ahead and get one after a couple of months. It is your place. :) |

Ha ha, I bet you're happy! I worked on cruise ships for 3 years and was gone from my family for a few months, home for a couple of weeks, then gone again. It was nice to be home after I "retired". I would just enjoy being with her for a while before you have to think about more mouths to feed, people to watch them, etc. :) |
