located in texas i've already made a few posts today, but i'm looking for anyone with puppies in texas that are reasonable preferably the abilene area or DFW area. looking for a male and female puppie male for me and the female for my 2 yr old daughter to grow up with. thanks. |
I would do more research on the breed. Yorkies usually are not good dogs to have with such young children. Not saying it can't be done....just saying make sure you do lots of research before making any decisions. |
Yorkies are toy dogs. No toy dog is a good choice for a small child. A 2 year old toddler does not have the stability or the coordination to even be around a tiny little puppy from a toy breed. If your 2 year old falls on top of that puppy, she will either seriously injure the dogh or even kill it. If she motors around the house, carrying her puppy, and she drops it or "sets it down too hard"...which I just read last week......it will break tiny bones or kill the puppy. Children are too loud and move to fast....this scares Yorkies and can cause behavorial issues. Please reconsider this plan. Choose a large breed dog that can fit in with your 2 year old without hurting either of them. Toy dogs around human babies is a disaster waiting to happen, I can guarantee you that! |
I'd highly recommend something other than any toy breed. They don't mix well with children. Craig's List is full of such stories....but I sure wouldn't recommend buying off Craig's List. A puppy is too important. When I was small, I grew up with a German Shephard and Collie. Even rode those. Great breeds for children. |

Please do not get a small breed dog for your child. These are not good dogs for children and are very delicate even the bigger ones. There have been maybe people on here who child has dropped, stepped on or sat on there puppy and the pup ended up need surgery or worse. If you want your child to grow up with a dog I would go with a lab or golden retriever. |

Actually it's pretty relaxed around my house because I am literally here day in and day out live in the middle of no where and don't get out much I have a small house but live on 65 acres so it gets really boring out here. I would be teaching her and the puppies how to do all that stuff at the same time I kind of gathered it would kind of help her with the concept a little better. My husband isn't always home with us and I just always thought they would be a good companion and plus we have had labs and golden retrievers they are not a good breed for us bc we have had them chewing things out of our neighbors yard and stuff we DID not like that breed for that reason. We have always liked small breeds bc we can take them places easier and not have to worry about leaving them at home by themselves. |
What about a cocker spaniel. Yorkies just are too fragile for families with toddlers are are often injured in tHat type of environment. Also yorkies can be very hard to potty train and that can be a problem also |
Hello and Welcome to YT. I agree with all above. If you are set on a toy breed then i would wait until your sweet daughter is older. Border collies and Australian Shepards are wonderful breeds. They are extremely intelligent, and will be easily trainable. They learn lots of tricks. They are protective so when you are left alone with your daughter you will feel safe but they are very playful. Just make sure you get one from a reputable breeder. Do not go to a pet store or back yard breeder. Good luck. |
I agree with all the posts so far. Yorkies do not mix well with toddlers. When my 6 yo and 8 yo grandchildren come to visit and even at the size 7 and 9 lb range of my yorkies my grandchildren are never allowed to pick them up or to be running and playing anywhere close to my dogs. I think a sturdier companion should be considered. |
I have to add one thing about getting yorkies for young children. I do lots of selling and buying on Craigslist. I always check the pets section to see who's selling what. I can not tell you how many moms are posting their yorkies for sale on CL because they didn't work out with their child. Based on history, I can't recommend a yorkie for a young child. It just isn't fair to the dog. |
Yorkies chew stuff too.... Every baseboard in my kitchen, my bookshelves, and even my speaker wire I thought I had cleverly hidden. If you don't like a breed because they chew things, don't get a dog. |
Luck Guessing with just my luck and such but anyways I have yet to find any that i can get so I beleive with my experience in lookin for two or them haven't been so great. I guess I'll give up looking for any. |
We have had yorkies with small children and they did fine. But the dogs and kids grew up together and were taught how to behave. Another small "lap dog" sort of dog you might consider is a maltese. We have 2 yorkies and a maltese and they all do fine together and they all do fine with kids for us. The only problem we have is that one of our yorkies doesn't like the neighbor kids, but that's probably because they are too wild and make her nervous. Our maltese is very good natured and everything I have read about maltese say that they are very sturdy dogs for their very small size. Good luck with finding the right puppy for your family. A lot of it is training the pup and teaching the kids how to get along with and how to interact with the dog properly. |
