Teddy Hair Tangle Scare
 
On the drive to the office park today, Teddy managed to get dangerously tangled in his car seat tether. His rear end hair was tightly wound from one end of the tether to the other. It was so bad, I didn't recognize it as the tether. I thought maybe it was his tail or leg.

Although Teddy didn't seem to be in any pain or distress, I was fully expecting to find a major injury on his little behind.

After 10 minutes of desperately trying to detangle Teddy, I was ready to flag down an ambulance for scissors. We were in back of a hospital, near the ER entrance. I even contemplated picking up the entire car seat and bringing it into the ER, but I didn't know if I could handle Max at the same time.

No ambulances were in sight, so I resorted to using my keys to saw the hair.

I was so relieved to find no skin damage or injuries. My crazy boys!

oh that is scary. so glad hes ok and you didnt have anything seriously hairy on your hands!!

How scary!! Never seize to put us thru that kind of stuff when we are least prepared too! Silly boy! Glad he is ok. :)

I'm so glad he wasn't hurt! Something is always happening with these little ones...never boring. Glad you were able to get him loose with your keys.

How totally scary!!! Another reason I keep Tibbe's hair short. My first Yorkie, Scotty, had such a caught-hair incident, fought and struggled while I was trying to help him- he just panicked - and after that, he got a haircut. Never again! His looks were secondary after that. And it was sad - though he was tiny, he had long, lovely, silky "robes" as my son called his coat.

Surprisingly, not that noticeable. His tail hides it well. I sawed gobs of hair off!

We are going to put a pair of bandage scissors in the car and I am going to sew covers for the seat tether harware.

You can tell people he got the poopscicle trim like I gave Princess...shaved down from the tail to the back of the legs!

Yes definately a good idea to cover the teather, I keep mine so short on my dogs since Princess tried to sit on the floor and was bungy hanging off the back seat once.

OMG!! Just when I thinkI have thought of EVERYTHING and have all my bases covered.... Thank you for THIS event! I would have NEVER had the foresite to see this happening! I already carry a monkey wrench in the car, to smash out a window in an emergency, and a slim jim to open a locked door, a box cutter to cut a seat belt,.... I will now add scissors......YA JUST NEVER KNOW!!!!!!!

Poor guy. I'm glad you were able to get him untangled and that he wasn't hurt. I've thought about carrying a pair of scissors in my car should we get in an accident and I need to get them out of their car seat quickly. Am I the only weirdo that pictures us getting in an accident and the car catching on fire? I have had a fire phobia since this summer when my grandparents lost their house and pets in a fire :(

I'm just wondering how do you think he managed to get that tangled? Does he move around a lot? Is the tether too long? I am just trying to figure out how to prevent something like that from happening.:confused: Gracie's fur is to her feet.

I posted on another thread a few weeks ago where someone was asking about car seats, that I don't like the Snoozer tether as ZoE's hair gets wrapped around the swivel part of the tether as she turns in the seat. I questioned if anyone else has this issue ...considering how many people seem to rave about these seats. So I'm curious as to what tether gave Teddy the problem.

OMG Kristin, I bet you were scared to death!! I would have never dreamed of hair getting tangled in the tether like that :eek: Thank goodness you were able to get Teddy untangled and he didn't have any injuries.

Your poor little boy. I'm so glad that Teddy wasn't hurt. Thanks for making us aware of this. As much as we try to protect our babies and no matter how careful we are, sometimes things happen anyway. By letting us know, we can now be more proactive.

We have Pet Gear seat & @ 1st, had the tangle problem bc both Mimi & Momo would move around a lot. One time, the tether got wrapped around her leg & I had to pull over & untangle it. Now that they're familiar w/their seat, they don't move around as much & Mimi stays by the window to the far right, that's her spot. Also, as I'm driving, I'll constantly check & fix the tethers @ a red light or stop sign.
I can see how it can be a hazardous problem & new users should be aware of the tangling problem.

Teddy does move quite a bit in his seat. Our mailman came into our garage as we were leaving, so Teddy may have been spinning in his seat.

The hair gets wrapped up in the swivel part of the tether hook and any movement makes it progressively worse. Normally the bottom tether hook is covered by the car seat cushion, but I had the cushion out for cleaning. We have had problems in the past with the tether hook that attaches to the harness. When the boys move too much, hair gets caught. We have this problem with our 30' leashes too. Not sure what the solution is. I need to cover the swivel area.

Yes! We use our Pet Gear seat the most and we have had the same problem. The boys have hair breakage on their backs from the seat tether and from our long 30' leashes. I am trying to devise something to cover the part of the hook where the hair gets caught and starts wrapping around.

As Yorkiemom1 wrote, a box cutter is a good tool to have within reach in the car, in case you are trapped by a seat belt.

Lisa, these little ones are more challenging than kids sometimes. They keep coming up with new ways to give us a scare.

The emergency tool kit in the car keeps growing and growing. I should have had scissors in there. They really are handy.

I've had a car seat tether get caught around a leg on a 5 minute drive. I shortened all the tethers which means everyone has to sit pretty still on rides. It's that or they are all getting crated. I've had near accidents in those seats too because of jumping around. So it does not surprise me in the least that the hair got tangled. I'm just so relieved that he only lost a little hair when so many other things could have happened. I'm so glad you're ok too Kristin!
