Tips to keep my babies safe while traveling? We are going to be out of town and we are planning to take our babies with us. They are flying with us. Do any of you have tips to keep them safe? I am fearful of theft especially. I am getting them chipped this afternoon, but do you have any other suggestions? Thank you!!! :) |
If you are staying in a hotel room, and leave the room with the dogs in it; put the dogs in their crate. This will keep them from rushing out the door, if a maid comes in etc. If you can put a lock on their crate door that only you two can open. You can put a MEDICAL ALERT sign on their crates and tags. Often times thieves don't want to be bothered with a sick dog. Don';t leave them unattended in the car! Have a spare collar and lead for them in case one breaks. Know exactly where the nearest vet is to your out of town location, put it in your GPS and know their hours of operation. Pack and take a first aid emergency kit for your pups. Have their latest pics on your cell phone. Take with you their medical records especially shot records and or any actual medication they are on. If you are holidaying with family, at that strange home, they should be crated when you can''t keep your eye on them. Doors are opening and closing folks coming and going, you don't want them to slip out the door. |
Great list Gail, I just want to add that having them microchipped would add to my piece of mind. It's one thing for them to be lost in your town, but a whole other thing when they are lost in a different town. Glad that's on your to do list! |
Yes, that's a great list! My other suggestion is to look at the local laws concerning pets. I.e., here in CA it's illegal to leave pets unattended in your car (not that you should because of theft and weather, etc). Also, some states have specific laws regarding pets in cars (I.e., in Hawai'i, Arizona and others you cannot have a pet on your lap). Some places also allow dogs to be walked off leash. This could be a concern for larger dogs and your comfort level with them while walking your babies. |
Thank you for your replies. We are going to be staying with my daughter. I am nervous to leave my babies alone, I am with them all of the time, they are rarely alone, but I know when I am there we won't be able to take them everywhere. Terrible but the two things I fear worse is the 1. the airline will lose them/steal them and 2. someone will come in her apt and take them. I know I probably sound overly concerned. I know preparation is the key! Where would I get medical stickers from? I think that is a fantastic idea. I even thought of getting one of those wireless cameras so I can watch them from my phone. LOL. Sorry, but I just love them!!! |
They will be flying in the cabin with you right? |

Try Business Depot. If they don't have a pre packaged one, make one up on your computer and laminate it at Business Depot. You can at many stores just google medic alert and you will find what stores carry the medic alert tags. I hope in fact you must take this pups with you on the plane in cabin. It is way too cold to allow them to fly cargo especially if you are in Alaska. |
Great list. I would just make 2 copies of medical records. Do not bring originals. Also have recent pictures attached to their medical records. Make sure the rabies number in on those papers too. Good luck. Have fun on your trip |
I didn't realize that the cargo area would be cold. I just googled airline safety for dogs and the ASPCA doesn't recommend it. My husband is calling some friends, I don't want to take them anymore. One site said they could get sent somewhere else accidentally and also that they are treated just like cargo so the crates could be rough-handled. :( |

They won't let but one travel with us. It is a first class flight and limited to one dog total per flight. Dh is putting some calls in to some friends, I think it might just be best. I would rather be safe than sorry... |
You did not say with airlines you were considering flying with, they are almost ALL different. A good resource is dogjaunt.com they have the listing for almost all of the airline seat dimensions or hights or requirement and what is available in almost all airports. ALMOST ALL. As other posters have said, take lots of pictures, you SHOULD be able to have both dogs on the plane with you at the same time BUT that is subject to the rule of how many people or other dogs ALREADY booked. The airline's agent themselves, not an agency, is the best place to get other info when you are ready to book. Tell the agent you have a small dog and it has an airline approved carrier, you do right? It will be sm fee per dog. The day you leave GET THERE EARLY, I carry Sprocket, go up to the TSA guys and say "HE'S AFRAID" and we just stand there. They have always been good to us. May you have the same luck. Please keep us posted |

I have travelled in cabin with a 130lb BRT as a Service dog with me. He had his vest/harness on with the Service dog logo and nomenclature. They gave us the bulkhead seating:) It is probably too late now to get the Support/service dog designation. But maybe not too late to separate out your flights from each other. |
I have chesters shot records that is with us all the time |
While all my babies are microchipped, I also have break away cat collars that are embroidered with their names and my cell and home phone numbers. I wanted to add Southwest will allow 2 dogs in the same carrier for the price of one dog...$75.00. |
