:aimeeyork : My three year old yorkie gave birth to three pups, one male and one female. The male and one female were smaller than the other female. I believe the two were in one side and the other one alone. Well after 6 days even handfeeding my little male died even though the breeder rehydrated him but he was very weak. It was devastating for me. The other little female started sucking well but then I noticed she sucked but not enough. I have been feeding her with a special formula I read about in the web. evaporated milk egg yolk and whole milk yogurt. He is been doing fine. He wants to eat more and more all the time but is very tiny, half the size of the other one. Her stool is loose and yellowish but she is content and sleeps well. I feed her every 4 hours. Her mom cleans her up and keeps her warm. She opened her eyes at 15 days. I am really hoping she will make it. How big will she be? Mom is about 5 lbs and dad is much smaller. She looks like a week old but seems healthy.I took all of them to the vet a week ago and he said she seemed to be doing well but could not tell what would happen. Any ideas? Am planning to start them on their own food also next week. What is a good brand and should it be soft or dry food crushed and with water?

No idea how big she will be...that's hard to predict at their age. I would give a soft mushed up "dry" puppy food soaked in water for introduction of food with a little of the formula you've been supplementing with poured over it and mixed in.

Oops, forgot to mention about your food question...

Just use a good quality puppy food. I'm using iams now. I know there's alot of controversy about iams company now, but it is a quality food. I've used science diet, they didnt like it. I've used pedigree, didn't get shiny coats, I've used puppy chow, too much corn. I've used nutro, pups liked but adults didnt. I've used Pro Plan (and still do mixed in with their other at times, and I like pro plan alot) Only one I haven't tried with them as of yet other than some samples is Royal Canin. Let's just say I've food hopped alot over the yrs to get where I am with them now. (my yorkies are as finicky as they come, you'd think mine had feline in their lines somewhere; they won't eat anything you throw at them unless its a real cooked meat) Also a good supp to give the puppies when they get used to their food is brown rice and white meat chicken mixed in with their food. This is also a good thing to give to a preggo mommy. There's lots of others here with their own good puppy recipes. Hope this helps.

thanks a lot for your answers, it makes you feel like someone is interested and wants to give you advice. I went yesterday and bouthgt step 2 powdered milk for puppies and the new nutro that has "all of the above" and no byproducts. It has salmon, rice wheat,soy, lamb, chicken, oats.... you name it. I will start with a little tiny bit tomorrow on their third week and we'll see. My little one is drinking from the bottle and I really don't know how much. I just feed him a bit and burp him and make sure he poops and pees and his belly is full. Seems to be content and sleeps all the time with her "big" sister which is double her size. I just don't know how much she should be growing and how much to give her but will start small. thanks again!

It is hard to say- the puppy should drink a "ounce" every few hours . This was just a example. What I do is use a digital food scale and weigh the kids.
They should be keeping their weight on a day to day basis and should show some growth no matter what. I don't care if it is 1/8 ounce I want to see something positive. The gruel of the dry food with water and formula is a excellent way to start. Once your baby starts on dog food weight should pick up- and as he gets teeth he will want less of the gruel and will be looking for dry food.

I do not start my puppies on solid foods til they are at least 4 weeks, even my larger puppies. If they are tiny, I like to keep them on their mom as long as possible as that is the best nutrition. Does anyone else have any ideas about the age given the size and concern of this post? Maybe just a little more formula til tummy matures.

thanks to all for your concern and replies. Today my puppies are 3 weeks old and I started them on a few little morsels of nutro "Ultra", great with all including salmon, rice, soy, chicken, lamb etc and ..no by-products and also a bit of powdered milk Step 2 from esbilac. My little one the one I hand feed was the one that was extremely interested and they both ate some. I was very happy. I would just want to know how much to feed my little one and how often because I am really exhausted to get up at 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. . I am not 40 any more or 50 ( a little bit more) I suffer from migraines and I"ve had them almost every day. I hope I can feed her every 5 hours pretty soon and with the solid I guess so? thanks
