is 5 months old a good age? Hey everyone, I'm new here and hope to soon be a new yorkie mom :) after dealing with problems ( breeders trying to give me 8 wk old babies) no parents on site etc; I found a reputable breeder yay!! the little boy is 5 months old. I'm going to met him and her this weekend. Now my question is, a yorkie of that age will he have a hard time adapting if I do get him? I don't want to harm incase he is already to bonded to his home already. Anyone with any advice on this or how I could make his transition easier? Thanks again! |
You shouldn't have any problems with a 5 month old. I adopted a 5 year old, two 2 year olds and a 3 year old. They carried some 'baggage' with them but everything has worked out fine. They just need time and guidance adapting to a new environment and a new schedule... |
Hello and welcom to YT. No you shouldn't have a problem with a 5 month old. Good luck on your visit? Let us know how it goes |
Welcome to YT! At 5 months they are still such babies in a way, he'll be fine! =) |
HI and welcome. Age shouldn't play a part in a successful transition to your family. When you meet the Yorkie, take note how he responds to you. Does he bark a lot, is he excited to see you, what's his current environment. Getting a chance to know the dog and whether he will fit your lifestyle is key. Once he comes home with you, he should adapt nicely to your home, but keep in mind, his personality will be pretty much the same. We tried to rescue one Yorkie and we took him for 1 week as advised by the agency. Unfortunately as much as we tried, he wasn't a fit for us and we reluctantly returned him. When we found Bailey, the moment we saw him he was happy, jumping and excited to meet us. We knew right then he was perfect and he has been for over a year. He was 6 months old when we got him. Good luck! |
Welcome to YT. lots of good information here and fantastic people |
If you feel this breeder is really reputable then you just need to see what the personality of the pup is. If the puppy is really outgoing in personality as a Yorkie should be then you should not have too much of a problem. I would really ask a lot of questions about how the pups have been kept. How have they been potty training them? Are they kept with the family? If they have been mostly in a kennel potty training may be from step one but most reputable breeders would have those pups at least trained to puppy pads by now. |
You shouldn't have any problems based on the age of 5 months. I got Mandie at 4 1/2 months. I got my older dog at around 5 months. And, I got my last dog before these 2 (a pom) at 6 months. |
I don't think it will be any harder for him to adapt even rescue dogs who are much older can adapt well. I would make sure to keep him on the same food for awhile and have a blanket or something that smells like the home he is at now. |
Thanks everyone, I cant believe all the great advice I got in such a short amount of time! I get to see him tomorrow I'm so excited!! I'll let y'all know how it goes! |

5 Months is nothing he will be fine it will take him maybe a month to settle in I got mine at age 5 and she was fine after a month or so and now she is suds a momas girl lol |
Do you have a baby blanket or a towel that you are willing to give to the pup? Stick it in your shirt and sleep with it to get it full of your scent then you can put it in the puppy's bed and/or crate. I'd also have a pup size toy ready for him to snuggle up with, especially if he is used to being with his littermates and/or mom! |
the visit with the little boy didnt go well....he was so attached to the breeder and his mommy I know it just wouldnt work :( he was such a cutie sigh..but lucky from reading more on this board ive contact another woman! So fingers crossed I find my little baby :)..hope everyone little fur babies had a great weekend!! |
5 months isn't "old" at all. I adopted my baby boy at 12 months and we are very bonded. We did have an adjustment period, but it didnt last long. He knows I'm his mommy and he's never more than 2 ft away from me AT ALL TIMES. Sometimes I think we're a little too bonded since he doesn't want to go with anyone else. He does have his little group of favorite people, but it's very exclusive and hard to get into. I'm just happy to be on top of that list. :p ;) |
