Is 6 months old a good age to have Amy spayed? She is do for her last rabies and bordatella shot next week. Going to make the appointment to have her spayed about the second week of January. She was born August 12 and that will be just about 6 months old. Is that a good time to have it done? She will also have a microchip put in at the same time. Have only given her one shot at a time and will do the last two on Monday next week and Friday. Don't want her to have but one at a time. Also going to do the 3 year rabies shot. Is the 3 year one better then the 1 year just because it will be one less shot for the next 2 years. Hope I have made sense. She weights 4.4 pounds now. |
You can do it at 6 months, but a lot of people recommend waiting until after the first heat on little dogs. I don't know if that helps or not, but I recommend waiting until about 8 months old. By 8 months, you'll know if she lost all her baby teeth or if she retained any that need to be pulled. If she needs some pulled, the vet can do it all at the same time (so she only has to go under anesthesia once. I am always for going minimal on the vaccines. |
I think doing it before the first heat is a good idea. Also with Small dogs my vet said shots need to be two weeks apart. The one year Rabies shot and the three year Rabies shot is the same vaccine. Also when she gets spayed I would ask the vet to pull any baby teeth left and make sure you get the blood work before the spay. |
The problem with doing it at 6 months is that not all baby teeth have had a chance to fall out. I got Mandie spayed at 6 months and he said it was too early to tell if she needed some pulled. I know for a fact that she still had both sets of canines on top and bottom at that time, but the bottoms have come out on their own. Only the top has ended up needing to be pulled. She's 8 months today and I just wish I'd waited. |

She will have blood work done before and it will be read before he does do it. Don't know if it is the day before or the day of. When we would have our sheltie's teeth cleaned the blood work was done the day of and then they would call us and tell us if it was ok or not before they did the cleaning. She will be there from the time they open until the next day about 3 or 4 in the afternoon before we can pick her up. They will monitor and watch her and make sure she is fine before we can pick her up. Mommy will worry the whole time she is there. Last month her baby teeth were all there but will ask them to look Monday when she gets her next shot. |

I will ask Monday if someone is going to be there overnight. Thanks, I never though of that. Now I will worry until Monday. |

I'd wait for awhile - after growth plates close, and if she is retaining baby teeth. |

I agree, for all the reasons mentioned. "Evidenced based research" (I am HUGE on research that has been done and has data to back up theory!) is now showing it is indeed best to wait until after the first heat....but before 2 years old...Progesterone is brutal on ladies that have NOT been bred and CAN cause issues after two years old! I recommend 8 months to a year old....at a year, you can get retained baby teeth, quick dental, and spay at the same time.....then your are done for a year! |
MandiesMom, they said they will keep her there for that long to be able to watch her and make sure she is eating, drinking and going potty. It sounded logical to me cause if you go to the hospital for any kind of surgery they basically do the same thing for you. |

Oh, and don't worry...the vet does this procedure a LOT. Your baby will be in good hands, I'm sure  |
