how do I get her used to a collar... I have never put a collar on Emy since I've gotten her, only harnesses, I've had her since she was 12 weeks..she is now 8 1/2 months...I bought one of those little grooming tables that you set on the floor, it rotates, and it has one of those loops, I want to get her used to being on the little table on the floor, but I don't just want to stick that loop around her neck, what should I do to get her used to it? I want to trim her up myself and not take her to a groomer. I know they put those loops around their necks and just leave them standing there...how awful...what if you had a dog that lurched off the table or something....anyway...I want to do it myself...but she has never had anything around her neck....any suggestions on how to begin..? Should I get a collar her size and put it on and take it off..in the kitchen and leave it on for a few minutes then take it off for a few days till she's used to feeling something around her neck? how do you measure for a collar, is it exactly their neck size with holes for adjustment? |
I bought Blazer a super small collar- small toy breed size/cat size with a quick release and slide adjustment for size. I just started putting it on him during the day and gave him treats for wearing it and ignored him when he scratched at it. He wears his collar constantly now and got over any "issues" with it after only wearing it for a couple of days. As for grooming, I don't have him restrained in any way- I groom him up on top of our tall wooden garbage can so that I can stand comfortably and walk around him. He doesn't try to jump down. Some times I'll just put him up on the counter or garbage can and play with him so that he enjoys being up there. |
OMG you are brave to put her on a garbage can unrestained...I couldn't do it, I just don't trust my little lurcher, so I will sit on the floor, and hopefully she will learn that when that little loop is on her that she is to stay still...thanks for the info on the collar by the way...I should get one and have it anyway, in case we go out, she can have it on with info on a tag...along with her harness.... |
LOL! Not brave, I just have worked on getting him to like being up there and he is ok whether he stands or sits. Any time he even LOOKS like he is thinking about jumping I tell him no and make him sit. He's 6 months old now and has never jumped off. |
It has been my experience over many years of working with Yorkies, actually ANY animal, the second you think they will "NEVER" jump from a counter or bed or will never bolt out the door, or run thru a fence, ......lets just say they will teach you! I do not trust them for one second..tooooo much can happen to frighten or intrigue them.....I have ended up with some horrendous vet bills doing that....not to mention, poor sick/injured animals!.....oh, and I broke all the bones in one hand because I just knew that horse was NOT going to try to jump that 7 foot stone wall!!!! |
LOL! My "never" was as in never has, not a never will! Also, and I figure this can be assumed, but maybe not- I never turn my back on him or leave him alone when he is high up! All of my tools are right within reach, as well. I've tried grooming him on the floor, he sees it as play time and feels that it is ok to try to escape. Up on the garbage can or countertop, he does not. |
Have you tried putting the loop on her yet? Gracie wears a cat collar so she has her tags on in case of emergency. The cat collars are break away so your dog won't get it caught on anything and get hurt. I also have one of those little grooming stands with the round turntable. You are wise to put it on the floor as you are getting her trained to stand on it. Depending on how skittish she is you may have to go a little bit at a time until she feels safe on it. Gracie never had a problem with the loop thing but she was used to wearing the cat collar anyway. I never put it on her tightly enough that she even felt restrained by it. But she does know the words "sit" and "stay" and that helps a lot. |
