How long can they hold it Hi Everyone! I am gone from home for about 10 hours (7:30-5:30). I'm wondering how long yorkies can hold it? Ally is potty trained (6yrs old) and she does pretty well at holding it. Buddy still working on potty training him (2 yrs old), I would have to put him in his kennel for him to not pee but I feel bad for doing that for 10 hours. In the past I have always had someone home to take them out and such but coming up soon it will just be me at home and I work 8-5. I'm wondering if maybe I can hire someone to go let them out (but I need to be sure I trust them 10000%) going home for lunch is out of the question. I tried that today and was 10 minutes late. So I'm wondering how long is to long for a yorkie to hold it? Thank you fellow yorkie parents ;) |

So I'm wondering how long is to long for a yorkie to hold it? I'm not exactly sure of how long is to long for a Yorkshire terrier to hold it in, but I have heard that it should never be over 5-8 hours. That is just what I heard from another dog owner, and not really a medical answer. I think it would be a great idea for you to considering hiring someone to let them out once a day while you're at work. I am one of those people that take dogs on walks and such for owners that have to work. All of the owners that I work more make me go through extensive interviewing before I am trusted with their little ones. The interview process consists of references, meeting MY dogs (to see if they are well taken care of), and me meeting their dogs. The owners then had me over to work with their dog while they were home to see how the dogs interacted with me. If you choose to go through this process it is very important to find someone that you can trust! There are people out there but just watch out for warning signs of bad people who don't actually like animals (but just want to make a quick buck). Good Luck with this! |
I definitely wouldn't put him in a crate for 10 hours and ask him to hold it. Even if you can't get someone to come over, you could get an xpen and set up his food, water, bed, toys, and a pee pad in there (or even just close off a part of the house with this stuff). |
I agree with Mandiesmom. Get them a playpen connected to their crate. I have a 24" 8 panel playpen and it was easily the best purchase I've ever made. I leave Kongs filled with food/treats to keep him occupied and not bored. You could then train them to eliminate on pee pad. If you worry about mess, use a pad holder. I got the IRIS pad holder at Amazon for a great price. |
I don't think you want to keep your dog in a crate for up to 10 hours a day. Consider that he would only have a few short hours a day of free time when you got home. Having a dog hold it for that long can cause some long term kidney problems. Do you have a room, like a kitchen or bathroom you could gate him into? The best solution would be if you could get someone to let him out at least once a day. |
I would get an x-pen with food, water, washable pee pad and a comfy bed inside. I have two yorkie pups and bought the 8 panel x-pen on Amazon. It's great and gives them plenty of room. |
Puppies can usually hold their pee for their age + 1. So if they are 2 months old the can hold it for 3 hrs aprox |
Most of the time though They relieve themselves at least once in the number of hours that corresponds with their age in months. |
A puppy does not even develop the capacity to start to hold back urine until they are at least 16 weeks old. The muscle that is needed to hold back urine is not developed until then. They will try to get to the right area if they are being taught. They must be near the potty area to be able to use it. An adult trained Yorkie can hold it for a few hours but it is also going to depend on how much it has drank. A dog has to have water through out the day so it needs to be able to have potty breaks. Some dogs will hold it for a long time but that does create stress on the bladder and kidneys due to back up of waste in the body. Eventually the organs will give out due to stress and will end up with kidney problems as well as other issues in the body. |
I got stuck at work one day and ended up away for 13 hours, Teegy held it, even if he did go on the floor I wouldn't hold it against him |
