You must think I'm a pretty bad Yorkie mom to put his life at risk for a needless procedure or keep taking him to a vet that would recommend a needless procedure! :) You don't know me of course from just a forum but I take nothing at face value without thorough convincing and a good deal of research. Just kidding 'cause I know you are wondering I guess why he needs one every year and the answer is I don't know. I know several other Yorkie owners whose dogs have to have yearly dental cleanings, too, so it's not just Tibbe.
His teeth are brushed almost every day of the week, he eats only his Science Diet I/D and gets NO human or dog treats other than made from his dogfood but he does form plaque around his little gums. Last year he even had a pus pocket forming right before his dental! When I got him at age 9 mos., his little teeth were brown-coated and he had to have a dental almost immediately and 4 little teeth pulled. I don't let him chew much of anything in the way of rawhide, Greenies, etc., for the reason Jilly choked, stopped breathing from a rawhide swallowed chunk and I'm too scared to just let him chew willynilly on anything. Plus, his iffy tummy can't handle much in it but his prescription food. I wish I knew why he forms that junk at his gumline and the vets say he needs regular cleanings but when even I can see the yellow stuff along the gumline and his breath begins to smell bad, I want it gone before he gets a tooth abscess like my first Yorkie did, unbeknownst to me. That little guy no doubt suffered badly because I didn't know Yorkies had dental issues in '78 when I got him. Never again that. I sure wish he didn't have to have it done but I am too scared he'll get a bad tooth and have to have it pulled if I don't listen to his vets. And from the frequent posts about cleanings on YT, I guess a lot of others have to have the regular dentals, too, even when they brush. I wish it weren't so - it is so scary each time to risk his little life to keep his teeth from going bad. :( |
