Question about size and breads I was told by my breeder that I brought a "TOY" Yorkie. Many people say it looks like a "TEACUP". Is there a difference or are toy's considered teacups? I have to measure him, but I know he is 2.3 pounds and I saw another Yorkie, same age but way smaller and a tan face instead of tan and black as mine is. I have pictures posted in the section under "Prince" I am just curious so I know how big he will get, the breeder said almost 4-5 pounds and I know teacups have some health problems. Thanks in advance. |
I am not sure how big your yorkie will be, but teacup yorkies do not exist. Yorkies are classified as a toy breed but do not have various classes of size levels like poodles. |
There is no such thing as a teacup it is a word used by bad breeders to jack up the prices of there pups. Yorkies don't come in many types like poodles there is just one type the yorkie just the yorkie and they are in the toy category. Many people who have been sold "teacups" the dog ended up growing to 12 pounds. Its hard to say for sure how big a yorkie will get until they are full grown its all just guess work pretty much. I think that people say "teacups" have health problems because all dogs that are called that come from bad breeders and many of them are sick or have health problems because of bad breeding, inbreeding, and the breeders just not caring if the dogs they are breeding are healthy. |

How old is prince?? He will change atleast 2-3 times his color before he gets his original adult color :) for ur yorkie to be a standard yorkies has to be 5-7lbs when full grown :) |
For yorkies the standard is 7 lbs and under. All yorkies are in the toy group and there is no teacup classification only by breeders who want to jack up prices on smaller yorkies |

He is almost 14 weeks, born on August 24th and full of energy. I almost got hit by those scams in Africia, Especially Cameroon until the check cashing place that sends Western Union advised me that they got a scam alert for puppies sold from Cameroon so I didn't do it. I did find a breeder online, T & S Kennels who were very nice. It cost me $650 through Pay Pal, with free shipping, Pedigree papers and UTD shots, except Rabies which he was still too young, and a vet examination the day before shipping.. My vet said usually 16 weeks, but will do it now. |

Your puppy is only a little over 3 months old? Did you see both parents? The Yorkie is listed as being in the toy group. As others have stated "tea cup" is a term that is used by people who are trying to breed smaller sized dogs without regard to the health issues they are creating in the breed. Without knowing the background of your puppy there is no way to tell how big he will actually get. Many of the people who come here were promised a tiny dog but ended up with a larger than usual Yorkie. |
The good news is you have your puppy and you will love him !! I would not buy online like you did the next time. I know you did not know and many of us have purchased our pups from byb or such and now know better. Yorkies are in the toy group and as many have already told you teacup is just a bad marketing term. You really don't want a tiny because they often have additional health problems. You can google "how big will my yorkie be" or look on the sticky notes in general yorkie discussion (at the top) and you will see charts that can give you an idea of the adult size of your yorkie. Please know... it is just an idea. If you knew the parents you would have a better "guess" Enjoy and love you little fur baby! You are in a good place to learn a lot about yorkies and dogs in general!! |
My baby was 2.3 pounds at 12 weeks, she was not sold to me as a teacup because my breeder knew there was no such thing. In fact she had recently had one of her babies neutered because she felt he was too small to breed. That said my baby turns 1 year next week and she now weighs 5.6 pounds. It is so sad to me that breeders don't even know the right terminology to use when addressing our babies! |

You will find that much of the general pubic seems to feel they are experts on what size a Yorkie should be and what it should look like. There are so many people breeding Yorkies without regard to the breed standard that there are many sizes and types of Yorkies out there. Not many of them are actually representative of the breed though. If someone starts to tell you what your Yorkie should look like or what size it should be just ask them if they have ever read the breed standard. Kyra was dark like your puppy as a baby and at a year old still is very dark. Its hard to say. |
sizing/classification/traveling I have also been educated on a way that indicates there is no "teacup" yorkie. They are a toy breed. I have had just one suprise out of four litters that turned out to look like a yorkie on steroids compared to my one pound usual size. Baby Belle tipped the scales at six pounds!. I jave also had a variety of very short legs and longer legs which makes a huge difference in how people perceive them. Lordy, please tell me when you ship one of these precious things you fly with and carry it in cabin? The only way to do it and amke sure there are no problems with hypoglycemia! Best of luck! |
Hi, my baby is 9 months old. Weighed 1.72 at 10 weeks. And is now around 5.8 lbs. She's perfect just the way she is! Love her to death! But she can be a little sneaky at times! |

When the name "teacup" is used to describe a yorkie it makes me so angry that these breeders are deliberatly misleading people to hike up the price of a puppy sammi was tiny when he was born he was the smallest of his litter he weighs 5.5lbs the breeder i bought sammi from did not use the name "teacup" as he knew they dont exsist just enjoy your adoable lil man he is soooooo cute :D |
At 9 months you pup still has some growing to do. It's hard to say how much though. It is all about what his genetic make up is. |
I hope some people have read that it was NOT the breeder that called the puppy teacup, but OTHER people upon seeing her puppy. The breeder never said more than the puppy was a TOY, which is accurate and correct. I realize there is some knee jerk reactions to the label teacup, but in this instant, there is a lot of ire seemingly directed at someone that doesn't deserve it. OP, enjoy your puppy. You were told that by some people because they don't know any better. It's not their fault, they have been taught that little dogs = teacups regardless of breed, and have no reason to think differently. Now you know that if someone asks you if your puppy is a teacup, you can tell them in yorkies, there is no such thing, and that it's just a term used by breeders that are more focused on size, which can be detrimental to the puppy. By educating them in this small way, it may open their eyes to the sellers of these dogs, and should they begin to look into the breed themselves, they know what to look for and what should send a red flag. |
