11 weeks too early to worry about ears Hi there! I'm sure many have asked but, I see so many conflicting things on the net and I need some help. My new puppy is 11 weeks old and his ears are super floppy. Not just a little. I really want his ears to stand up. I know I should shave them but, how? Does anyone think he should have his ears taped? Is that cruel? Am I worrying too early? My first yorkie's ears were standing by about 6-7 weeks. My second ones, at 8-9. I will take a recent pic and post it in my album on my profile if anyone would like to see him. Thanks so much for any help! |
I'm not sure about the taping, I didn't have to tape Joels ears. I waited until he was about 5 months and trimmed them and with in a couple days they were standing up, But I don't think the taping is cruel:) |

I saw your little guy in your album..super cute:) I start shaving my babies ears (just the top half) when they are about 5-6 weeks... it helps with them standing and I like the little ones to get used to the clippers anyway. I do it every couple of weeks when they are young to make sure the ears stand, and I've never had a pup that their ears didn't stand by 8-10 weeks (sometimes they droop a little during teething but go right back up again). I use a wahl peanut shaver, it's pretty small and easy to use. I hold the ear flat against the palm of my hand and just go from the middle of the ear up. Repeating on the other side of the ear and then do the next ear. Debbie Tea', Katie and Paige |
Thank you all for the help! ilovejoel, I think I'm going to try shaving first and see if that helps. I don't want to resort to taping but, if it comes to it, I think I will. I really want his ears to stand. GuinnessStout, Thanks for the pics. Guinness is so cute!! dbeach, Thanks for the help with the shaving tips. Gonna try it out tomorrow! Raleigh is a little bugger. I am not sure how it's gonna go. He is so squirrely! I was gonna try to trim the hair around his eyes. He thought I was trying to play and kept trying to get the scissors. I'll Let you all know how it goes! Thanks again! |
To me taping was the easy way, I wrapped his ear in gauze then tape around it not too tight it did not even bother him. |
Hello! My Max's ears were floppy at 3 months. They went up on their own at about 5 months. For a while one ear was down and then it would be up. I do think it is too early to worry but I would read other suggestions on this forum. That is what I did and I never had to tape. Good luck! |
Zivas ears started looking less floppy at 14 weeks, I trimmed, massaged, and fed her cottage cheese (for calcium) every day. They stood up for short times and then one day went up and stayed up! She is 3 and she will hold them down when she is not feeling well, is mad or sad, and if I let the hair grow long. |
Jersey is 51/2 mths...she has one ear perfectly standing the other is floppy...gonna tape the one that is floppy and see if I can't help it along.... |
I trimmed his ears this morning. I couldn't do it with clippers. He just wasn't having that. I ended up doing the best I could with scissors. It worked ok but, even with those he was such a squirmy worm. I'm going to keep them as trim as I can for a few weeks and see if that helps. I'll wait a while to resort to taping. Only bc I think he's going to be a turd about it. I have also been feeding him about a tbsp of low fat cottage cheese for about two weeks already. I've only had him for 3 weeks. I hope this helps. I think the shaving is helping already but, it could all be in my head! Lol! Thanks again everyone for the advice. GuinnessStout, gauze is a great idea before putting on the tape! Ps, my husband thinks I'm crazy! |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ctureid=123781 I don't know if this s the right way to do this or not. Here is a pic of Raliegh with his trimmed ears. |
My puppy's ears are also floppy. I'd love to shave his ears, but my puppy is very restless and won't let me touch his ears for long. Also, if I use tape, I bet he'd manage to untape it in seconds. I think my best bet would be to get a groomer to shave his ears for me. Floppy ears are cute, but I understand that it would reduce chance of ear infection. |
