Charlie get free range of the house. We close the bathroom doors and doors to rooms we don't want him in and he's free to roam about anywhere else. |
When Buster was being house trained I would baby gate his crate in the hall outside the bathroom. He has pee pads in the bathroom and goes outside as well. As he earned more privileges his free range territory expanded to the whole apartment except the kitchen. I worry about hot items spilling, dropped onion, chocolate, etc as he is a little vacuum and is on any dropped item in a flash. I crate him during any time workmen are coming and going through the doors. He is really good about not running out but it only takes one time and we have a busy street out in front. I have to watch out for papers as he loves shredding receipts and money. I worry a shred might get stuck and choke him. I was really lucky as he enjoys chewing on his toys and not electrical cords, or shoes. I did baby proof all cords and outlets just in case. I have expandable gates that I use when to keep him restricted when moving around heavy items or cleaning the floors before I can rinse them. My floor cabinets with cleaning items have baby safety locks on them. |
With puppies I don't feel like any room is puppy proof enough for a pup because some will chew on EVERYTHING even walls and carpet so I think a play pen is the best idea for a puppy. I would only do free range with an adult dog who is potty trained and wont chew up things and cannot get into anything that can hurt them. |
since i am a housewife i am rarely gone from the home but when hubby and i go out for errands oscar is gated in the kitchen and the 2 other dogs have the rest of the house... |
When Gracie was a puppy she was only with me when I was home. I kept a close eye on her at all times. She was very good about using her potty pads from the start but she had to be near them and not wander away. When I would have to leave I had an area set up for her in the bathroom with a baby gate so she could not wander but not feel shut off from the home. As she grew she got to have more freedom as she was able to handle it. Puppies are so curious and such chewers that you really need to protect them from their selves. She now has free run of the home and is very trust worthy. Too much space at a young age will result in big problems. |

Both of mine are gated off in my kitchen and dining area of my house when I'm gone. |
Willow and Allie have free roam of the house. Now my Luci, I put her in her playpen as she is just too small for me to leave out while I am gone. All of mine are fully potty trained, but I do leave out potty pad's just in case. |
