Too Young?? nala will be 5mths. on the 15th do you all think she is too young to go to the groomers? i just want to get her trimmed mainly around legs, paws, ears etc. i asked the groomer if i could just bring her up there for a few hours instead of leaving her all day but she says she keeps them all day so that they will get use to staying there (i plan on using her regularly). they get to play with other dogs and run around they're not kept in a "cage" all day. i trust this lady we have taken our other dog to her for years and she does a reallly good job she is the one who started the animal shelter in our town so she know her stuff (also organized a huge dog show) anyways back to the point do you think it would be ok or should a wait til she's a little older? i would trim her myself but i am not good at it at all she would probably end up looking like a skint rat, lol. please let me know what your opinion is. :animal-sm |
I would say 5 months is plenty old enough to take to the groomer. I have questions about the practice of allowing all the dogs to interact. There are more people that we realize who do not keep their dogs' vaccines up-dated. How does the groomer handle that issue? Also, I would take my baby in and maybe have nails clipped or a sanitation cut done while I watched out of the puppy's sight. See how things go and work from there. I am not sure why the dogs have to stay all day. How about you, Yorkie Rose? You groomed for a hundred years.. ;) |
If she were my puppy, it would depend on how many sets of shots she's had (sorry, I can't remember the schedule). Also, I would ask the groomer if she can assure you that any dogs coming over are up-to-date on their shots. I do not think that she's too young to be groomed. I think the earlier you start the better. It's easier to get a puppy used to new things than an older dog. I also think it's good to socialize your puppy with other animals & people as soon as it's safe. I did not do this and am now having problems. To correct the situation, I've had to spend three times as much time trying to "upset the apple cart" (as someone said to me). Instead of spending time cooking dinner, I'm finding places to go where I can bring my puppy - no complaints here :D my kids are loving it and I'm loving spending so much time with Lexi. This is just my opinion. There are many on this board that are ALOT more knowledgable than me. I'm sure you'll get more advice. Good Luck. |
for all first timers she requires proof that the dog is up to date with shots, she keeps them all day so that when the continue to come back they will be use to being there i say all day meaning sometime after 8 and pick up by 4 i think nala will love being able to play with other dogs actually i know she will. the lady that grooms is a very nice lady knows and is friends will all the local vets (very small town) and as i said before she got together our animal shelter and organized a dog show that is held every year so she knows dogs and knows how to take care of them. i would have to say she is the most popular dog groomer in our town. i also know her personally. but i would still like to have input from other dog groomers. |
forgot to add that nala has had all her shots |
I just looked it up and Lexi went to the groomers for the first time when she was 6 months. It was at the vet and she spent hours in the cage and I later found out that they sedated her (without asking!!!). I'd much rather have given her the experience you're going to give your furbaby. In my opinion...5 months is old enough. If it makes you feel better, why don't you make the FIRST trip half of a regular appt. Only get done what needs to get done and only leave her for 1/2 the time you normally would. This will help you get through the first time and help acclimate her to the new experience. Just a thought. |
