Should I get another Yorkie? I have my Bowser boy who is a year and a half now. Well I've been wanting another dog for him and for us for awhile now. Hubby is a bit reluctant which makes me worry however he does understand and agree with the benefits of a second dog. We spent some time with a Papillion and a MinPin and they were just not the dogs for me, I love my Yorkie! Bowsers breeder is having another litter and none of them are claimed yet... though they will be ready for new homes in about 2 months. I do have some questions though! 1 - Should I get a boy or a girl, or does this even matter? Obviously the #1 concern is personality. But do you think sex will make a difference with Bowser? He likes ALL dogs, he has never met one he wasn't in love with. 2 - Is getting another Yokie more beneficial than getting a different, larger dog? Hubby really wants a Golden retriever and while I do LOVE Goldens, I just don't see how they can really play together and burn energy together like two dogs the same size could. Even if Bowser likes a big dog (which he would), he can't really bond with it the same way, can he? 3 - Should I wait to get a second dog? We are moving in May and it's going to be a hassle enough with one. However, right now I don't work so I would be able to spend a lot of time with it, and we have tile floors so I don't have to worry about carpet getting ruined. And last of all, can you guys give me some general tips and experiences on what it was like getting a second dog? |
2 dogs are twice the fun, but also twice the expense and work. :) I am so happy we have Teddy, but it was much easier going places and doing things with just Max. Gender: I don't think it matters. It comes down to the individual dogs. Breed: There are many small dog/big dog successful combos on YT. They do bond and snuggle. However, I would recommend this only to people who are really good at training dogs. I know it is beyond my capability, so I am more comfortable with both dogs being small breeds. Moving: This is definitely something to consider. Are you moving far or out of country? If it is a complicated move, I personally would wait. Best wishes in making your decision. |

Oh they are already born, they were born Oct 16. So they would be ready around Jan 16 (by bday is 19 and husbands is 20!). Thank you all for the tips and considerations. I still feel unsure about what to do. Part of our reasoning on another SMALL dog vs a big one is that we are military and move every 4 years. The pets ALWAYS go with us, but it is easier with smaller dog. Plus, if something goes awry and we wind up stuck in a small place (not a great chance but a possibility), we will be okay with two small dogs. But a big dog in a small apartment would be hard. |
Oh that's awesome on the dates! :) I didn't realize you were military. That doesn't change that a big dog can still work with a Yorkie, but I would definitely go small if I was in your situation. I'd go with the Yorkie for the reasons you stated :) |
I have been considering adding another one as well. I did have a problem years ago with two Shih Tzu's that did not get along so I have put off the decision but truly Gracie loves dogs and people so I think it will be alright. Since you know the breeder you have a better idea of what they produce and how well they are socialized. Before I got married I had a small female Maltese. After being married my husband wanted a larger dog. While my Maltese put up with the larger dog they were not friends and did not play together. If you get a second dog I would get another Yorkie as it is just a better match. Does your husband have a problem with small dogs? I know some males think they need a large dog as some sort of symbol. I think two small dogs don't quite equal one large dog so he could still get his larger dog if he wanted to care for it himself. I would be concerned about the personality of a larger dog. There are so many irresponsible breeders out there that produce some really inferior dogs that many have some real personality issues. I really don't think the sex of the dog makes as much difference as the personality and that is something that is hard to gauge with a puppy. Adding another one while your present dog is still fairly young is probably a better idea then waiting. Usually a younger dog is more accepting of changes in the household. Unless you had problems training your present dog there should be no real issues in getting another. |
big dogs We have 2 dogs. Jewel is 55#a and a very good calm dog. Trixie is 3#a so far and loves playing with Jewel. Trixie likes to play chase and she knows enough to make sure there is always some where to hide if needed...like under the couch. I just always still keep an eye on them since she is so little. But I think they enjoy each other. |
I would definitely recommend if you do get another dog, to get a small one. With your situation, it would not be wise to get a large dog and then get stuck in a small apartment. Honestly, I would stick with the one small dog until you are more settled... But that is just my opinion. |
