Hello . All I would like to say hello to everybody. I'm a new Yorkie owner (mommy). Jessi is 8 wks old and we've had her for only 2 days. having trouble getting her to eat ANYTHING. Finally ate a little bit of deer bologna. After two days of not eating, she went crazy over it. Rather tasty, too! Any suggestions to get her to eat what normal puppies are supposed to eat? Thanks for any suggestions! Jessi's Mom |
Hi and welcome to YT! =) Your baby is a little young to be away from her mother yet- 12-14 weeks is the "acceptable" age for a Yorkie to go to its Forever Home. (Though I only learned that from joining YT and had brought my Yorkie baby home around 8 1/2 weeks.) Anyway, my point of that is that may be where some of her food issues are coming in- she may not have been on full solids yet when she left her mother. Did the breeder give you any of the food she was on? How has she been eating that, or did you have to switch her up to another food? Some pups just end up having a difficult time adjusting to new surroundings. Neither of my dogs- a GSP and a Yorkie X- like to eat when we are away from home for more than a day. New surroundings and all that- give your girl some time to adjust and in the meantime keep her food down where she can get to it when she is hungry. Good luck! =) |
FIRST ALWAYS ask your Vet for advice. He or she may not agree with our answers. With that said, This has worked for me. Try moist kibble and use the same food her breeder was using at first. Slowly change her food to what you want her to eat. At eight weeks she should be fully weened, so I would not give her puppy milk. Try a boiled chicken breast, cooled and deboned, add tiny bite size pieces on top her kibble. Also pure meat prepared for human infants is ok too. A teaspoon of cottage cheese, or plain yogurt is ok use on her kibble. I am sure others will offer more suggestions. |
Welcome and congratulations. Have you had her to her first vet visit yet? If not I would start there. I know when I brought Cali home at 9 weeks she would not eat. Her blood sugar went low and I had to rush her to the ER. I finally found one food she would eat. It was cesar's in those little tins. It's not a good food but I had to get her to eat. Eventually I got her on a good food. I would watch her closely for any signs of hypoglycemia (low sugar) since she is so young and not eating regularly. Nutrical is good to have in hand just in case. We love to see pictures so when you can post her picture. |
I just went through this with my sister in laws little one for the same reason was taken from mama to young. I ground her kibble to a dust in a coffee grinder and made a soup of it and used a syringe to feed her until she finally decided after a couple of days to lap it from a bowl. I continued with this until she was 10 weeks old and gradually added dry kibble. Good luck. This little one needs to eat at least 3 times a day. |
Mine was too young when I brought her home 4 years ago. We fed her plain yogurt with chicken baby food when until she was able to eat her ground kibble. We also gave her nutrical. We had to feed her every two hours at first so her blood sugars would not drop. |
Hello and welcome. She was taken to early from her mom I would talk to the breeder and find out what food she was eating. She was probably mixing a gruel up for her. I would also take her to the vet. Do not wait. They go down fast that little |
