is this normal? I have a 8 month fur baby. Got her when she was 10 weeks old from a puppy broker/mill. I've always been able to feel her spine and rib bones. She has been gaining weight, and is around 5 lbs, 13 long and/13 girth. But her bones I can still fell. Is that normal, or should I take her to the vet and ask? Vet has said she's healthy, I had her fixed, still dealing with skin issues though. But other then that she fells boney. I have a 12 lb teapot, and can't feel any of his bones. Just wondering if this is normal. |
I can feel my 12 lbs bones too... I really hope that is not bad because geezz I would end up with a 20lb yorkie haha |
My rule of thumb is that you should be able to feel them but not see them. |
Oh, that's good to know. I can't see them, but definitely can feel them! |

Every dog is different. It depends on how much bone you are feeling. If the spine and ribs do not have a good deal of fat covering them then she may be on the thin side. From you measurements she does sound kind of light for her size. Has she been to the vet lately? If your unsure then having her checked out may be your best bet. Does she have a good apatite? |
Yes, she was seen in October to be fixed. Vet said she looked good. She doesn't have a great appetite. Basically eats when ever she feels like it. Plays, sleeps poop and pee all normal. I guess she's just on the small side or thin side. |
Like people, cats, and all animals, some dogs are just leaner than others :) |

Laddy was on the thin side at 4.8lbs until we moved. Not sure if it is the new house or food. ( I started adding chicken to his kibble) He is up to a very nice 5lbs no and looks and feels perfect. |

As long as the bones are not protruding and they eat well, exercise I think thinner is healthier. I swear to you my forever skinny Scoobers eats like a horse! I want his metabolism!!! |

Yeah, my vet told me when I got Mandie that a healthy weight for her is you can feel the ribs and spine when rubbing on her, but you can't see them. I'd still ask the vet what he/she thinks on your baby but I think that's what most will say. |

I can feel Harry's spine and ribs too - but can only see them when I bath him. As I've said before - in the bath, he looks like an advert for a poor neglected third world charity-case.....I can assure you he isn't!!!! :D Sally + Harry x |
