Good or bad idea? I've tried a few tooth pastes for Joel and found out he doesn't like ANY, doesn't matter what flavor or brand he knows if it's an actual tooth paste he won't like it. Today I bought the cheese spray for his kong and he likes it, so would it be a good idea to use that as tooth paste, it obviously won't be to clean his teeth but just for him to like teeth brushing time. I figure it's better than not brushing at all. What do you think? |
Try putting it on the brush and see what he does. Maybe it will help getting him used to the brush first. Then just brushing his teeth with nothing. Then the toothpaste might work. Good luck. |
Maybe try putting the toothpaste on the brush first and then putting a bit of cheese spray on top of that. So he's still getting the tooth paste, but maybe won't notice as much. |
It took me a few momths to get Bella to let me brush her teeth. I started out putting the paste on my finger and letting her lick it off. THen let her lick it off the toothbrush. Finally she will let me brush her teeth, she doesn't like it, but tolerates. :) We use CET vanilla mint from the vets office. It smells good. In fact I forgot my toothpaste last week on vacation...Yes I did. I used her's. So it does taste good, but it doesn't foam. It served it's purpose for sure. LOL |
You might want to try one of the enzyme gels or sprays for your pet's teeth. You don't have to do as much brushing because the enzymes destroy the plaque and other bad bacteria in the mouth. They also have one that you can put in the drinking water. Some dogs just won't accept the brushing. You really need a good tooth paste to actually take the particles off the teeth with a brush. |
Well, in the end I can eventualy get his teeth brushed. Last night I got almost all his teeth brushed with his new snoopy tooth brush. But I just want to find a way that doesn't involve having to hold him down, thats why I wish he would like tooth paste. I guess holding him down is better then having no teeth, lol |

Joel will thank you! :p |
We seem to be having good luck with this... Cleans his teeth and breath and he just thinks he is playing lol LiquidFloss and TriFlossBall |
Thanks:) I'm gonna try that |
Uni doesn't really like toothpaste either. I found she will tolerate CET chicken flavor. I use the Petzlife spray and her teeth are still pretty white, she's almost 6. |

I don't like the cheese idea. I think you'd just be squeezing bad stuff between teeth, where it would cause more decay. I like the Noonster's spray idea for a dog that refuses to allow its teeth brushed. They may not like it, but it's faster. I use a finger brush and a poultry flavor toothpaste. I start by letting them lick a little bit before I rub the brush on their teeth. Eddie's needed one cleaning (at age 6) in his 8 years, and vet said they looked great this year. Jillie has tinier teeth, but she's needed no cleanings in 3 years. |
I'm not using the cheese idea, lol But tonight I got joels petrodex toothpaste and went to rosco and said "Look roscoe, do you want to brush your teeth?" and guess who started coming up to see whats going on. So I gave him some and he was more interested only because roscoe had some, and he HAS to have everything roscoe has, lol I put some on his toothbrush and I actualy brushed his teeth with it, with only a tiny bit of fight from him, other than that he was good:) |
Our vet suggested dipping the brush in chicken or beef broth and they love it lol. |
Use a spray. |
