hummm....for a Yorkshire Terrier to be the all time winning-est Yorkie AND the ONLY Yorkshire Terrier to ever win Westminster....you don't think he also had outstanding physical attributes. t takes both physical and temperament to make a great dog. My point was only what was stated. Great dogs are sold as pets everyday! I think maybe we had a mis-connect? ya think. sorry if I don't understand.....I think I will bow out of this conversation. That's a matter of opinion. I've had and know of many dogs that lacked alot phycially, but were great dogs! But that is beside the point, or "futile" as you put it. Yes, I think it best to just say we had a mis-connect and leave it at that. :cool:

TaxHopper73 --- I started this thread and used the term "backyard breeder."

I mentioned in my original post that "I hate this term." I am not even sure what it means. I felt then that it might not apply to all breeders who breed their pet yorkies in their homes.

What exactly does it mean?

Does it mean people who just throw their animals out in some area and let them breed without a lot of love and care?

I guess should call the loving people who raised yorkies in their homes
"front room breeders." That does sound good either!

Anyway - please let me know what BYB really means.....so I can use it more appropriately.

Carol Jean...BYB has been discussed here many times and the definition that I've found most often for BYB is someone that will throw two dogs together and see what they get. The breeder I referred to is a BYB. She doesn't care about the fault that they obviously have. She is not a puppymill, she only has 1 breeding female but she only paid $450 for the female and has made thousands off of her.

BYBers come in all shapes and forms. They breed in larger numbers or smaller numbers. Not all the conceptions happen in the backyard. Some in the kitchen, some in the barn; heck, some right in front of the neighbors in the living room. I personally divide breeders into several groups in my mind and tick each one off when I talk with someone. I can just about look at a puppy and tell the quality of the breeder. Now, every breeder has a clunker sometimes-too large, too small, too leggy, roach back, bad bite..these babies make perfectly wonderful pets and should be placed with the proper families..I cannot tell you the joy I feel when I have been able to match a puppy with its perfect mom and family. I do not feel sad when I don't let a baby go. I have been accused of being discriminating against aged or working families. I know what is best for my baby and no amount of money can buy a puppy from me if I do not approve of you. By the same token, they should not buy from me if they do not find a good fit..I simply want the best placement for my babies and I consider myself the best judge of that. I will try to help you find a puppy that might be a good match, but don't always count on that...

Umm...yeah, that's more or less what I said, is it not? Show breeders breed for show, but some pups will not end up being 'show quality' and will thus become pets. Yes, show breeders to try to achieve the best possibly of the breed, but such is not always the end result. I think we are on the same page here? :thumbup:

just a question, for you or anyone else that may have input in each state what does a show yorkie go for as compared to a pet quality. i didnt mean to offend anyone by using the term back yard breeder i learned that term here on YT. i just feel here in florida yorkies have become the money market. all these yorkies regarding the newpaper are priced at 1000 dollars a pup and up. my only beef is with the dishonest breeders that tell you anything you want to hear to selll you that puppy. i wasnt promoised that my pups would be show dogs, nothng was said about showing these perticular puppies, but i was verbally promised that their parents both pups coming form differnt breeders had ancestors that were champions. my female was advertised in the paper as champion lines. After i recived her pedigree i found that theres no champion lines and really i shouldnt even breed her. So with that i am ticked at there breeders. The only contract i got was a verbal saying i had 72 hours to have them checked by a vet and the only way i could get a refund is if there is a life threatening genetic defect. i spent 1200 dollars on my female pet quality yorkie and 1000 for my male also pet quality but the only option i have is to return and i would never do that! Once agian i wish i found you girls/guys before you have all been so helpful and understanding! My question all the way up at the top is just curiosity of how they are sold state to state.

Hi! I've checked out the Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and the Victoria paper. Pets are starting out at $500 and go up from there. I've not spoken to a show breeder around here but there is one in town that sells her pets $1000 limited registration.

I have spoken to other show breeders and their prices start at $3,000 and go up from there. I would love to eventually purchase a show potential/quality pup AND show, but I'll probably have to wait till my kids leave home since their sole purpose in life is to suck me dry!
