19 hour car ride? We are going on vacation over Christmas to Florida and driving down from Pennsylvania. Winston gets sick in the car, and has never been on a car ride longer than 1/2 hour. We are leaving at night and driving thru the night, so I hope he sleeps most of the time. But, I'm sure he'll throw up during the first 1/2 hour or so. Any suggestions? I just need to make sure that he drinks and stays hydrated and also eats something during the trip. He is now 14 months old and I really want to take him along. The two of us will just hang out while in Florida while the guys do guy things. I think he'll enjoy the warm weather. Does anyone think it will be a problem with taking him on such a long drive? And yes, we will drive straight thru. No hotel stay. It will be a van full, but he'll have his Snoozer Booster seat, so he'll be safe for the ride.:aimeeyork |
I would talk to your vet about something to help him not get carsick otherwise it will probably be a miserable ride for him. |
You can try giving him 1/2 a regular benadryl. That helps with carsickness and the only side effect is sleepyness so that would be good too. |
Mine used to do almost a 9 hour drive almost monthly but he loves going for rides and does not get sick... I would call the vet and just see what is best for him to take so the poor guy is not sick the entire ride. |
I agree with lovetodream, I would ask your vet about giving him something to keep him from getting car sick. Luckily my two don't get car sick, but I cannot imagine making him go through a 19 hour car drive knowing he gets sick :( |

We travel a lot and always plan a brief stop every two hour so we can stretch and take a little walk. Cali can travel forever with that plan. |
My daughter drove over 1000 miles with 3 cats this summer. One of them was really a nervous sort and always panicked on the way to the vet. She got some Rescue Remedy for pets and gave it to them in the morning about an hour before they left. The cats never made a peep all the first day and they slept in the hotel room just fine. She was amazed how well they all did but was especially surprised about the nervous one. I think she ordered it from Amazon but I know they sell it at a lot of pet supply outlets. |
Bella will get sick also. If I make sure she eats about an hour and half to two hours before riding she seems to do good. If yours doesn't want to eat their food, I will give in and give her some of her treats, just to get something on her stomach and it settle before the ride. |
Do you use a carseat? Not only is it a safe way for your Yorkie to travel, but being up and able to see out of the window, sometimes helps with travel sickness. We have snoozer car seats and LOVE them! |
