Biewer Yorkie - white My son rescued a little Biewer Yorkie. He is mostly white with a black spot on his back and tail. He is 7 months old. There seems to be much disagreement about this breed. He is only 3 lbs, 7 months old and his hair does not seem to be growing in evenly. I love him to death, but I am concerned there maybe health issues due to bad breeding. He has not lost any of his baby teeth and 1 testicle has not descended. He is going in for surgery for both next 2 weeks. What else should I be aware of in terms of health? He shakes and he is very afraid of fast movements but always wants to be in my lap and be with me. I can take him anywhere and will sit quietly. I want to teach him and do the best for him. Any guidance and suggestions. |
He probably still is losing his puppy hair and getting adult which will cause the uneveness. If you are getting him neutered it will be a little more extensive because of the testicle not being descended. Welcome to YT and best of luck and prayers for your little man. By the way we love pictures here :). |
Well done to your son for rescuing the little Biewer! Biewers are really loving little companion dogs who just want to be with you forever. The behaviour that the rescue is displaying will get better if you establish a firm and stable routine for the puppy, so that he doesn't have to be afraid of the world anymore. Give him plenty of time and space to adjust to his new home, and create a quiet little space for him where he can be alone. Something with three walls and a roof works perfectly, like a travel crate, because dogs are most comfortable in a den with only one entrance. Plenty of exercise and training will help him to develop into a well-rounded dog. As for his breeding, the piebald gene doesn't have a known association with health issues unless it is expressed excessively. The genes determines that the white colour usually starts on the feet and the more the gene is expressed, the higher up the white colour moves. With Biewers, we want their faces and backs to retain other colours. If they don't, they run the increased risk of developing hereditary deafness. Retained teeth and undescended testicles is a common problem in small dogs and don't necessarily reflect bad breeding like a bad coat does. To improve his coat, you can feed him a high quality species appropriate diet and supplement with fish oil for added assurance. He won't develop his mature adult coat until about two to three years old. |

you guys are great! I am so taken by my little guys love and affection and was so worried about his health and temperament but your replies have helped. He loves to go into the travel crate I flew him home in, but at the same time he follows me all over the house. I work from home so we both get allot of time together. I have lots of pictures I just need to figure out how to upload them. |
I can't wait to see pictures of the lil one. :) |
I started an Album of photos - not sure where to tell you to look. |
He is adorable!!!! |
Goliath has allot of white. Does anyone think he will get more color as he get's older? He is 7 months. |
I can't tell you, they change their coats until 2 years old! and i'm not sure about the Biewers, as Harley is my first and he is white, tan and blue. |
Your pup is adorable. I'm glad to hear that your son rescued him! |
Goliath's story is he was for sale in some boutique pet shop in south Florida and he was very sick losing his hair and had pneumonia. They cut his price from $1600 to $900. After a few weeks they decided to put him down. My son had seen him a few time and when he heard they were going to put him to sleep, my son negotiated with the shop owner and for a fee he took Goliath. Over the next few weeks my son nursed him back to health with some meds from the vets and Goliath recovered. After a month Chris was looking for a home and I took Goliath home. He seems to be very happy and playful I believe he will do fine. My vet had some concerns as I was saying earlier in my post but over all I think he is doing well.;) I am excited but also a newbie with a Yorkie and I don't always know what to expect!! I think I am in the right place to learn!! |
He is such a cutie |

I'm involved in the South African Biewer club and we admire the darker colours in Biewers greatly and it's a very important consideration in our breeding program. Goliath obviously comes from a substandard breeder, but he looks like an adorable boy and I'm glad he found you to give him a good home. If you are interested, you are welcome to take a look at our dogs to see what colours we strive for in the Biewer: BBC | Our Boys |
The thin coat could be attributed to the pneumonia or some dogs will "blow" coat after vacinnes. So it's possible that's the cause and not simply he has a hard silk coat which is thin, will not thicken, nor will it grow very long. As far as his coat...his head at one time was likely tri colored...it's just faded out. I would expect his back to streaken as he ages. Look for "freckles" on his skin...those areas will usually start coming in darker as he gets older. He will not ever have a "black" saddle though. With some patience and love I'm sure he'll settle in and be a fabulous pet. Enjoy! So glad your son "found" him. |
