New Parents New parents to be......our little guy will be here next week. I wanted to read up on the best books, find the best beds, etc., etc. Any advice? |
Congrats! I have not received my furbaby yet, in a couple of years, but I hear that the Cloud 9 bed is the bomb (Cloud Nine Beds*::*Bedding*::*Yorkie Haven Rescue Boutique) and the book Yorkishire Terriers for Dummies is a great book, it is the book that I am currently reading... Congrats once again!!! |
My best advice is begin training on day one. The younger your Yorkie learns the rules the better. A good foundation will make your Yorkie safe, secure and well behaved. Find a good Vet and rely on their advice. Educate your self, read different training methods and find what feels natural and right for you. Be consistent with potty training. Feed your pup a good puppy kibble and not people junk food. My favorite books are: Dog Perfect by Sarah Hodgson, 1000 Best Dog Training Secrets by Robyn Achey & Bill Gorton and Dog Dilemmas by Gary R. Sampson DVM |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! How old will your pup be? I would suggest looking into the best food for him. Here are some thing I would suggest you look into purchasing (if you haven't already): -Cloud 9 bed- You can find them here: Cloud Nine Beds*::*Bedding*::*Yorkie Haven Rescue Boutique -Exercise pen - for potty training -Grain free kibble -Harness- or one once he's full grown. You can find inexpensive ferret harnesses at Petsmart if he's still a puppy -Potty pads -Collar - only for his tags, you don't want to walk a yorkie on a collar because they have sensitive tracheas -A high quality brush - we use Madan brushes -Quality shampoo -Stainless steel bowls - for food/water and I'm sure there are many more things you will need... That's all I can think of for now. Have you found a good vet? |
Hello and Welcome to YT. *"Yorkies For Dummies" and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" are excellent resource books .Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. |
Larry coming home 1 Attachment(s) Here is a pic of Larry (Larry is on the left) We are so excited and thank you everyone for your comments. This is totally new to us, our babe that will always hold a special place in our hearts was a very large doberman. We will make home made meals, we did with our babe. The problem is that we are in Canada, seems everything great Yorkie is only available in the US and lots of places don't ship to Canada. I will continue my shopping and if all else fails will take the drive this week and buy his welcome home gear in the US. |
He's so handsome! Congrats!! No recommendations for you (we don't get our little boy for another month), but I've read Yorkies for Dummies & I think it's been helpful already :) |
Good luck with your little boy. Larry is adorable! I also homecook for my little girl. I supplement her food with BalanceIt so that I am sure that her food is nutritionally balanced. I agree about having a good brush, but I also use a comb for Katie's hair. Jenny, a YT member, is wonderful to work with, and I love the mustache and shiny grooming combs. I wish you love, laughter, health, and happiness with Larry. https://secure.balanceit.com/tools/recipegenerator/ toplinepet.com |
Hi and welcome. There are some vendors that DO ship to Canada...I'm in Ontario. Member here Ladyjane ships to Canada...Cloud 9 beds..I have one and in the process of ordering another. Bow Biz Bows ships to Canada...I have a Madan brush that I ordered from a member here also. The books that Verbena mentioned are available from Amazon.ca...wonderful books, I have all three ordered from amazon.ca. t Buddy Belts are available here as well...depending on where in Canada you are...Global Pet Foods (some, not all) sells them. You will have to check for location to see which ones, as they are franchises...or check out Maximo member here, Kristin also sells them. Hmmm thats all I can think of right now....if you need anymore help as to who sells what here in Canada, let me know and I'll try and help as much as I can. BTW where in this great country of ours are you located, my Canadian neighbour?? Again Welcome to YT! |
Larry is just adorable and I have 2 yorkies and a havanese :) |
Congratulations on your new puppy. You are going to have so much fun! My husband bought me Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies before I got Columbo. That was almost 9 years ago. We still laugh about that book. It talks about them always being ready for an argument. I didn't know what that meant then....now I do, lol! Also, Columbo looks just like the little cartoon character in the book, only his talking balloon would be filled with expletives... |
Just wondering how the new puppy is doing? |
New baby What a cutie, hope he is doing well. Did I see that the dogs in the pic have curly tails? Is it the standard in Canada? I must say I think they look good with tails! Apologies if my eyes deceived me! |
