General Questions! Hello, I am new to YorkieTalk and I am awaiting a new furbaby around April/May 2013. I am wanting to prepare so I can be a great yorkie mom so I have a few questions. What is the best food for yorkies? Is it true that if they get low blood sugar, you can feed them a marshmellow or cheerios? What type of bed would be the best for her (She will be small). How well do yorkies react to crate training? What shampoo&conditioners are recommened? I just want to make sure my little princess is well taken care of :) |

You will hear my different opinions on food. It really comes down to what works best for your fur baby. Avoid the cheaper brands and watch for treats made in China. I personally home cook for mine. For low blood sugar, I keep Nutri Cal on hand. You can get this at numerous places. My vet also carries it. For beds, my girls LOVE the Cloud 9 bed you can get through Yorkie Haven Rescue. I have 3 in my home. :D I have never crate trained so I can't help you here. Shampoo is another that you will find different opinions. I think one of the best is Yorkie Splash and Shine. We love the detangler, Yorkie Sheen. Another favorite of mine is IV SAN Bernard. It is pretty pricey but I really like it for my Rosie who has long hair. Hope that helps! Again, welcome! |
Welcome, you have come to the right place! Ok mine do very well in a crate, however they are only crated at night as they (I have three) are NOW potty trained..I think. I alco love the cloud 9 beds, I have one, will be purvhasing another two soon. For grooming, I personally love Bio-Groom, Going to try the Yorkie Splash and shine as well. For food, you will get many differing opinions...I feed Orijen, they also make Acana...they are a Canadian company....I live in Canada so I try and use Canadian products. |
Hello and Welcome to YT. "Yorkies For Dummies" and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" . These are excellent resource books . Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. |
They do get hypoglycemia sometimes but I would not give her marshmellow for that you would give nutrical or karo syrup. Cheerios are a great treat. I would leave the pup on the food her breeder has her on for a few months and then if you don't like the food think of switching. Do you know what food the breeder will be feeding her. Your pup being healthy and getting the best start possible is important so make sure you pup stays with its mom until 12 weeks. I would not spend to much money on a bed because they normally either tear it up or potty on it. I like nootie shampoo. |
