I was "taken" to the forum after posting my last question on "reply"... SO HAPPY TO SEE THE "Post New Thread" button lol!!!!

I'm sorry to be a nuisance you guys... I certainly don't want to aggravate the very people I need advice from!!!!

My question is: After the vet visit and his knees are APPROVED is it ok for this 3 pound, 1 year old male yorkie to go up and down an uncarpeted staircase (15 stairs total)? Or will this develop some kind of spine injury?

[B]i think it is fine for him to use stairs if he can but please do so with extreme caution.. yorkies have tiny delicate bones and a fall down a staircase could cause serious injury...[/B

ps i just noticed your post said "uncarpeted staircase" . i really would not be comfortable with that personally.

I hear you loud and clear. NO STAIRS. I will be investing in baby gates. PERIOD. Again, tysm (thank you so much) for everything. :)

I have intentions of doing just that in time...we recently moved into this house. I don't yet know my color scheme so buying a runner right now is not the best idea, however you are right. :)

:thumbup: there is a wealth of knowledge here it's great! I would carry him until you get some sort of carpet on the stairs:)

Real questions are not ever too dumb to ask or a nuisance. We are so happy you have joined us on YT. None of us has all the answers. It is nice to have a place to talk, laugh, cry, share and help each other. I think you will find many friends on YT so Welcome !
My comment: A baby gate would be great. going up and down steps that are not carpeted might be hard on his little hips and knees.

We have carpeted stairs for my fur babies but we keep the baby gate on them because its nice to have a place that is "people only" :) unfortunately Remy (our GSP) and Sammy have teamed up and Remy can sometimes knock the fence down long enough for Sammy to run upstairs and collect all the people to play and pay attention... This happens most often when I am trying to take a shower or vacuum... Lol. The point of this is that if you get a baby gate be sure it fits well and cannot be knocked over or gets loose because my little partners in crime are so smart sometimes... And I'm sure your baby is too!

Hi thanks for taking the time to respond. I agree with you all about carrying this little guy up and down the stairs... My sister has a 6 pound yorkie and he goes up and down without issue and my sister lets him so with my 3 pound lil guy I really needed advice from as many of you as possible cus i was not thinking it was ok... He's such a fast little rat that I don't always catch him outside when he's playing with my other dog (Shih tsu mix) and they run up the 5 unslippery stairs to get inside. Should I be worried?? I do keep him from going up the indoor stair case (15 uncarpeted stairs). He's soooo fast and the 5 outside escape me!!!!! :eek: I'm excited to keep in touch and enjoy you all and all your awesome advice. :)

Normally I would think a healthy dog should be able to go up and down steps but I had a bad experience with uncarpeted stairs. We once had a Shih Tzu and some uncarpeted stairs. He had no problem going up and down the stairs until one day my daughter came home from school and went running upstairs with the dog right behind her. The dog slipped and tumbled down about 7 or 8 steps. Off to the vet we went when I got home from work! He was limping badly. Thankfully he did not break anything but he was a hurting little guy for a couple of weeks.

I went out and purchased carpet blocks and glued them to the steps until I was able to have them carpeted properly. It wouldn't be hard to carry the little guy up and down the steps. He may very well be spirited enough to tackle them but with him being so small the chances of him slipping are pretty good. I would just try to avoid that if at all possible.
