Question on cutting elk antler treat in half I bought an elk antler treat for Macy from Mr. Chewy and it was delivered today. She has been tryng to chew on it but it is too big for her mouth. I bought the smallest one they offered. Does anyone know what I can do to cut this thing in half so she can at least get it in her mouth? I tried my Drummel but the antler is no match for the Drummel. Is there something else out there that I can try instead of an elk antler that anyone knows of? I wanted to try something other than a bully stick. |
I don't buy antlers. They may be good for chewing but I would be concerned about a dog being able to break a piece off of it. I buy 12" long bully sticks. They actually start out longer than she is but she loves them. She can only soften the end of the stick which is good. You don't want the cheap kind that are easily softened and that they can actually eat. A good bully stick will soften at the end and that also helps to clean the teeth. I was having a terrible time with Gracie's chewing before I finally got the bully sticks. She was a destructive chewer and I was really concerned she was going to find and chew something that would really hurt her. |
Best way is a band saw with a fine tooth |
The antlers are huge. And heavy. I don't understand why a dog would be interested in those since they don't smell like anything. I bought one for Uni and she didn't even give it a second look. I think you'd probably have to put it up against a circular saw or something. But it's thin compared to what a circular saw would normally cut, I'd be afraid of cutting off a finger! |
These antlers are cut in pieces about 4 or 5 inches long. This piece is about 1/2 inch in diamter and seems heavy but she tries to carry it everywhere. It doesn't smell and she seems to want to chew on it. The reason I tried an antler was because I read they don't spliter and they remain hard even when wet unlike a bully stick. Bully sticks give her bad breath and stink even though I buy the "unscented" ones. Does anyone else have a dog that likes antlers? |
Sophie Kate loves her antler(s). We always get the pointed end which are pretty manageable. We call it her Unicorn Horn, one of my guest called it that once and the name stuck. |
If your fur baby is a strong chewer, I don't recommend cutting the antler in half...it can chip & crumble. I bought the ones that were split & it started to crumble in small pieces. Don't think it's safe for them although they say it's 100% digestible. I ended up throwing it away. They mainly lick & grind off the middle part where it contains all the vitamins & nutrients. I don't think the outer part is meant to be eaten. They lose interest bc it's so hard to get the middle part out. We just stick to himalayan chews, I've found them to last the longest. I've been throwing them away when it gets small (1.5-2") but recently, I've learned that you can pop it in the microwave for 40-45 mins & they become a puffy cheesy treat! Have yet to try it, they're still working on it.:D |

As far as cutting the antler, I wouldn't. If you go to Pet Supermarket (this is where I got ours), they are in bins and you can choose the size/circumference. I got two different ones, one is fairly thin (I thought Luna would like that one, her mouth is tiny). Izzy loves both of them, but Luna just looked at it like "so?"  |
My mistake, it's 40-45 seconds not minutes! Quote:
