Yorkie growled and tried to bite Hi - I rescued a yorkie over a year ago and she has been the sweetest and best little dog you could ever ask for. Over the summer she developed a caterat and we later found out after several tests that she has progressive retinal disease, which will at some point leave her blind. I give her drops and medicine every day and she is a real trooper. Then tonight my sister in law who Fenway knows well, went to give her a kiss and she growled and bite her on the face. My husband went to scold her and she then tried to bite him and he is a favorite. She has never come close to doing anything like this before and I am so worried and sad. Any advice you could provide would be helpful!! |
This is just a thought but maybe something is bothering her. I would take her to the vet and check her out Usually when a sweet dog starts to bite or growl they usually have a reason. Maybe the drops you are usuing at bothering her. |
My first thought was that she was startled and bit out of fear. But the more I think about it I think she may be having some pain. A trip to the vet is definitely called for. Any time a dog acts out of character for no apparent reason it should be seen by a vet. Good luck. We have had a great deal of experience with eye problems in our sweet little Shih tzu and she was in a lot of pain. The only symptom she displayed was confusion and peeing on the floor. Pain can make them act just about any way you can think of. |
We have friends that had a 8 year old family pet. The dog was loved by everyone. Then one day as their daughter was about to leave she bent down to kiss the dog good bye and the dog bit her! It was a shocker. A week later the dog growled and tried to bite someone else. Long story short, the dog had a bad ear infection, although it showed no signs of it, the poor thing was in terrible pain and afraid of people touching it's head. Your dog is going blind and is going through some frightening changes. She can't see properly and is afraid of what is happening to her. You may not realize that there may be other things that are gong on with her body as well. Please approach her carefully and keep others away from her. This is a very difficult time of stress and fear for a dog. She needs to make a careful transition to a new way of life for her. |
Sudden Change in Behavior, means something is going on. Pain, confusion, fear or panic may cause a dog to growl, hide, nip and even bite. Please have your Vet check her out. Be sure to explaine this behavior has never happened before. If the Vet can't pin point the cause, I would assume it was a reaction to being fearful and in pain. I think the disease caused blurred images and she did not know what was coming at her face. I would not allow anyone other than myself to pick her up and no more face kisses unless she gives them on her her own. Try not to feel sorry for her, she will sense that and it will make her feel afraid. I have had dogs that have gone blind and they do quite well. Hugs |
I agree with Teresa, I have bit so many times by dogs at the shelter where I volunteer and almost everytime it is out of fear or panic. As much as your SIL wanted to give your little girl a kiss it may have scared her..no more kisses, let her offer the kisses first. |
I agree i would take her to the vet. She might have something wrong. Also if someone approaches her have them bring their hand up to her from under her chin and let her sniff them. So she can recognize them by their scent. Let us know how the vet visit goes. Good luck |
To be safe, a vet visit is a good idea. My suspicion is thayshe has very little vision left and coming at her quicjkly isn't going to work anymore. It is possible that my uorkie has the beginnings of PRA. It is hard. Are they sure it is PRA? Was the cataract corrected? |
Thanks for your comments. I called her vet today and she is going in tomorrow afternoon. She has also squeaked and snapped today when we tried to pick her up, almost like she hurt one of her ribs or something. Very worried about her :( will keep everyone posted. |
Poor little girl. My heart is breaking for both of you. I hope the vet can help relieve her pain and that she can feel secure and safe once again. |
