Yorkie tail not standing up? Hi everyone! I am new to this forum, and have just taken home my very first yorkie. She is 7 months old, and has a docked tail. but it's always down and tucked and she never raises it. Is there a way to fix this? Or is it normal? |
It might just take some time for her to be completely comfortable in her new home. Also my little one doesn't always wag her tail. It takes something exciting for her to get it going. Some pups tails wag more than others. And welcome to Yorkie Talk! :) |
It's definitely not normal. How long have you had her? Has she been exposed to any trauma? I think I would have a vet check it out and make sure there is no physical problem or injury. Besides that, it could be a sign of anxiety. My little rescue Ralphie often had his tail down in the early months, it was a good indicator of how much anxiety he was feeling. Glad to report, his tail is always up now a year later! I remember one show with Cesar where he made a thing that held the dog's tail up while he walked. He was a very anxious walker and Cesar believed that putting the tail up would change the dog's mind set. Anyway, it worked and after lots of practice the dog started walking with its tail up. If the vet says there is no physical trauma that causes it, I would look to ways to build his confidence, and training and walking can both help with that. |
My Ziva's(3 yrs old) tail is docked short- just a stub really and she keeps it tucked most of the time- especially when you go to look at it ! Then we got Abby(16 months), who was docked by the same vet- short stub that wags and does circles! it seems to be fully part of her spine while Ziva's is more like a separate extension. They are not related and have very different characteristics and personalities, tails included!. |
4 days I actually just got her four days ago from a lady that was - and I quote "annoyed with her" and "wasn't what she was looking for". I couldn't wait any longer i had to get her. So issues with potty training too, but the tail was the confusing part. I think you guys are right. she gets scared very easily and thinks I'm going to do something mean when I call her lol, the poor thing freezes, and flops to her side. :( So just a confidence boost? I take it lots of praise? |

The poor thing is probably just scared, especially, with what you said about the previous owner. I'd give her time to get to know you. They are such precious babies but very sensitive, if you've only had her a couple of days, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Hopefully by now you have fallen completely in love with her...and she will feel that and start to get her confidence. Good luck with your baby, I'm sure she will be fine. |
:) Thank you! So far she has done really well with me, she follows me everywhere, comes to her name very well. She will go to bed if i ask her too, stays when i ask her to, and sits. I found she wont go through the door first unless I do (that one I haven't seen before with a dog) Still working on some other tricks. It took me a couple days to figure out what treat she really likes and that has made things better lol. I'll keep working on her and I am sure things will improve in the next little while! |
That's fantastic, aren't they just the sweetest, most precious dogs you've ever had? Sounds like you're doing a great job! |

Mandie's tail tucks like that when it's hurting her to poo. So, if you aren't seeing any issues with her trying to poo, I'm almost certain it's just the anxiety and it will eventually go away. I'm so glad you took this pup in from a home it was not welcome in! |
Mine's tail is NEVER up... He even wags it tucked. |
I am so glad that this pup now has a loving home |
Poor little mite, I'm so glad she now has you to love her! |
:) Thanks everyone! I sure am happy I have her with me now! I'll keep everyone posted on her progress soon! |
