Carsickness Has anyone tried something for carsickness that works good? I'm getting tired of not being able to take Joel anywhere because he shakes, drools and "gets sick" in the car. I want to try and use something natural instead of getting something from the vets. Any ideas? |
I'm not sure of anything natural, but my pom used to get sick every single time we went somewhere in the car. I had to give her a piece of dramamine for trips (but I only took her on long trips when i did this..not sure I'd do it daily or anything) |
Since Sammy was a baby he has been taking drives with me at least once a week.... And he still hates the car! The only thing that I have found is to bring his entire kennel in the car... He feels safe inside it although if Joel isn't kennel trained it might make him more nervous...I just put the entire kennel in the passenger seat and sing along with the radio! Lol |

The kind of symptoms you describe sound more like stress that results in some stomach upset. What does he ride in? Some dogs do better in a carrier where they feel safe and can't see the movement of the car. Many dogs love riding in a car and want to see everything but not all dogs can take that much stimulation al at once. You might try taking short trips in the car with him in a enclosed carrier and slowly working up to a longer ride. He may eventually get over his distress and enjoy the trip, especially if you take him some where fun and not just to the vet or groomer. |
I does sound like stress. What do you have him in? Also I would just start get him used to the car. By just putting him in there with the car not running. Talking to him. Give him a treat. Find a special treat that you will only use in the car. A special toy. Start slow. 5 mins. Every day. Then longer. Make it fun. Then turn on the car and do the same thing. Then drive to the pet store for a treat. Make it a fun experience. Good luck keep us posted |
My friend has that issue and she took her dogs out every day for 30 minutes a day until they became good with it |
Thanks guys:) I've tried holding him in the car just to see if he is better but he still gets sick and also in his crate covered. My brother got him a carseat but he does the same thing. It's easy not to go in the car at all to avoid him getting sick,lol but I'm gonna start slow and work him up to it:) There was only one time he didn't get sick, when I was taking him to his play group I kept saying where gonna see your friends, lol |
My female used to shake and was nervous in the car for the longest time... I just kept taking her on short trips and made it fun and she got over it. Doe Joel have a car seat? I've noticed my two love their seat and being able to see out the windows makes riding in the car safe and fun. |

I use "motion eaze " totally natural has things like peppermint, lavender, chamomille, birch, myrrh and ylang ylang. You put 2 drops behind each ear. My vet recomended it or tranquilizers... I said no thanks to the latter. Also since it is natural it is safe to use again if 1st dose doent work. check at walmaart they can order if they do not carry already it is in same area as dramamine. Works wonderfully! Hope this helps!:D |

Dramamine scares me after our pediatric dentist suggested it as an anti anxiety for kids I talkes to our pediatician who is advisable against it, numerous deaths a year due to it yet it is still given by the millions regularly OTC! Needless to say my kids see a new dentist, and despite Princess getting sick even for a short car ride when the vet suggested it I passed. Poor Princess just doesn't do car rides unless absolutely necessicary. We use these wrist bracelets now for the kids work great totally safe...wish someone would utalize ancient chinese medicine and make some for dogs. |
My girl is gonna be 2 yrs and she likes car rides and even jumps in by her self but gets carsick :( after a wile she trows up :/ i guess some doggys are just not ment to go in car rides lol My boy just turned 1 and he loves car rides too :) he loves bein In the window and has never ever got car sick even the first day i picked him up it was a 3 hr ride and he made it like a champ :) i Love my MARLEY <3 |
Sam get sick on car rides that are longer than 30 min and has ever since he was a pup. The last time we took an hour and half car ride to grandma's house, I had both boys, Scooter and Sam in the same crate. After about half way into our trip, I noticed Scooter was leaning all up on Sam to where Sam was being squished on the crate wall. I kept trying to tell Scooter to scoot over but he refused and I couldnt do much because i was driving. When I was finally able to let the dogs out of the crate, I saw why Scooter was squishing Sam to one side of the crate - Sam had gotten sick on Scooter's side of the crate. I felt so bad for both of them. |
Sometimes it is better when they are looking at the horizon. But if they just watch everything go by out the side window that is where the sickness comes |
Ahi only gets sick if she doesn't eat or drink anything before the ride. Other than that she loves to go. I can tell when she starts to feel yucky. She will curl up in her carseat and go to sleep. |
