Will my puppy ever cheer up? I bought my first puppy two weeks ago at 8 weeks old - now 10 weeks old. He is a tiny morkie - about 1.5 pounds currently. Ever since we got him, he has been extremely calm and lethargic. I have found him playing once before ever. He has been to the vets several times and we found out a few days ago that he had worms and a parasite, which he is currently on medication for. We feed him every two hours and spend 70% of the time cuddling him, but he spends 99% of his existence lying in bed - almost always with his eyes wide open, just staring at nothing and looking depressed. He doesn't even do much walking around. Will he ever cheer up?? |
Sounds medical since he's so young. Doesn't mean behavioral shouldn't be ruled out, but I'd be more concerned about health, diet, even neurology before I just said he's sad. While most pups play hard, they do sleep a lot. A bit too young to have left mama... Personally I'd pick a mellow snuggly puppy over that wild crazy in your face play play one. Might just be a highly intellegent little one aklmating itself to the new environment. Elvis is super mellow, perhaps he was as a pup, or iys cause affect of his previous environment. Try a laser light and give it some time. |
I would imagine he's not feeling 100% if he's got worms. He'll probably perk up when he's rid of the worms. He's most likely still missing his mommy & siblings too. |

Poor baby....he was too young to be separated from momma and siblings.....he is trying to get over the shock of the loss. On top of that, he is sick....he has worms and they can make a baby lethargic and uninterested in his surroundings. Did the vet do any other bloodwork on him...hopefully this is all that is wrong with him medically. Just keep loving and cuddling on him, and make him feel secure and loved....and give him time to get well medically....he is "lost", and is trying to re-establish his existance without his momma and littermates, and he doesnt feel well. Patience, patience and loving care is what your baby needs..... |
Sounds like the poor little guy feels like POO and misses his siblings.. Being that young and sick I would think about getting him one of those puppy security pets that have the heartbeat like his mom to cuddle with. |
I agree with all of the above. Also, might try giving him a little bit of puppy nutrical to see if it helps his energy levels. |
A little off subject and a tad random but that :p I would love to know what goes thru their little minds.. Hmm hold on 8 weeks ago I was happy wrapped in a ball with my siblings inside my mommy then I got forced thru this scary dark tunnel and landed in a really bright place on this thing they called a towel and after 8 week of visiting that towel place with my siblings some huge monster took me away and I no longer get to play with my siblings and my mommy is gone and my tummy hurts really bad :( then this monster keeps putting me inside some moving object thing to see other monsters who force needles in me... I am so scared and just want my family :( Yes I know I am a tad nuts :) and also really really really bored at work doing my Saturday 4 hours for the month lol |

My brother tells me, "These are DOGS!!!! They are cognizant of 3 minutes before IMMEDIATE present, and MAYBE 5 minutes after IMMEDIATE present!!!....but then he thinks I have gone off the rails because I put dresses on my girls and vests on my boys!.........But I dont buy it! I still think they think all the above!!! :D |

Harry's actually got a voice (in MY head!!! ;)) And sometimes I actually DO that voice..... And I end up HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH MYSELF in TWO VOICES...... :shocked7q:sidesplt: Oh dear! Sally + Harry x |
Hahaha omg I am sooo glad I found this forum hahaha I actually do fit in here. Before my husband came back from working out of state for a year Guinness and I would chat at night of course I would speak for him in his puppy voice that I think he would sound like. :p |
:D And before we had Harry, we had a labrador called Rosie, and she was a very shy 'girlie' girl....and she spoke with a LISP..... :D I actually found that really difficult to shake off!!! :sidesplt: Sally + Harry x |

Your poor little boy obviously came from an unhealthy environment. Having parasites is bad enough but the medication to get rid of them is tough on the system. His little body is very stressed right now. I hope that parasites are the only problem you are going to be facing with this poor baby. Hopefully, after he has recovered from the parasites and the medication he will start to perk up. Keep feeding him often and try to get him to drink lots of fresh clean water. Keep him warm, too. |
Wow I think we are all the same. That is why we all get along so well. We have more then one voice in our heads. . . . . . I say more the merrier lol |
I would definitely find out if they did a full blood work up. If they didn't I would have it done. I would rather be safe then sorry. Make sure that it is only the worms. Once that is all checked and if it is only the worms then once he gets rid of them he will be feeling better. Also the stress of leaving his family. One thing you can do is they have these little puppies at Petsmart. You put them in the microwave and heat up. Gives him a feeling he is laying next to a sibling. Or you can just use a hot water bottle covered with a towel. Did the breeder give you a blanket or towel? It will have the siblings scent on it. Everyone that is looking for pups, should ask if they do it.. And if they don't, give one to the breeder. |
A warmed blanket or a snuggle nest with a stuffy from an infants department that makes heart beat soubds is very effect in both comforting a puppy and for crate training. |
