My understanding is that the best time to neuter is at least 8 months. Puppies need the hormones produced by the testicles for proper physical development. Secondarily, many here advocate doing it at the same time as remaining baby teeth extraction which many yorkies appear to require anyway. This cuts down in the number of times they are exposed to anesthesia. My baby, Baci, was neutered at 9 months. Good luck in your desion. I adore my little sweetie. Just know it's a bug commitment and that first year can be intense!with all the potty training.

Well, as you may tell by my avatar, I got a little puppy on the weekend. :)
His name is Louis but spelled Lou'e. He is the most darling and precious dog ever and I couldn't have asked for a better puppy. He is pee pad trained and very quiet but gets into his hyper bouts. He sleeps all night as well.
My boyfriend and I are absolutely smitten with him and so is everyone else that sees him.
He is a purebred Yorkie that came from a reputable breeder. I am still doing a tun of research on the breed and how to train him but so far so good and he responds to his name as well. He just needs to go for his last two shots and I will be planning on neutering him when he is around 6 months old.

I will say this, a lot of the vets that I called around my area say that there is a neutering before 12 weeks called "pediatric neutering" where a lot of breeders do it so protect their breeding lines - the only issue is that it may stunt their growth and that is not what I want.

He doesn't want to walk - but then again he is a puppy and the breeder told me that for now he should just go on his pee pad until he gets a little bit older.

I can't seem to find the Yorkies for Dummies book!! GAH! Very frustrating...I might just have to order it online.
Any other book suggestions?

My boyfriend and I got our first yorkie over a year ago and he is my little baby boy! :) We got him around 9-10 weeks and he was only about 2.2lbs. To be honest, kind of wish we would have waited to get him but we were first pick between 2 boys in the litter and the other people were coming back that weekend to get their boy so we didn't have much of a choice. Regardless, everything worked out well for us. Both my boyfriend and I work and are gone most of the day too. You should see if anyone can come over and play with him a little during the day while you are gone or if you cannot make it home during lunch.

Not going to lie, they are A LOT of work and unfortunately for us, Geno is verrry stubborn when it came to potty training so it's good that your guy is pad trained. We did neutering around 7 months as well as microchipped and had teeth pulled. I think microchipping is a must, but that's just me. I hope everything with your little guy goes awesome and so happy that you decided to join us on YorkieTalk! You can find so much information on here. It's amazing!

Although you already got your guy, I just want to let you know that researching and learning about Yorkies doesn't end here. I am constantly coming back on here to find out answers to different questions I have such as - my yorkie is doing this or that, is that normal? why won't he do this? why isn't he fully potty trained, ect - so definitely bookmark this site! :)

I got my first yorkie when I was 21 and living in an apartment. It was definitely a big change from my kitties, but I loved it. You are now responsible for a living being... Taking him for walks, ensuring he is socialized, fed a nutritious food, that he gets the vet care he needs etc.

Good luck with puppyhood! Make sure to take lots of pictures because it goes by soooo fast! :D

The second book I recommend to all my new owners is "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide", also available on Amazon! Congratulations on your new baby! You are hopelessly lost now!! You will be wrapped around that precious, tiny, sweet little paw! I have to suggest hold off on the neutering thing...you want to get extra teeth pulled at the same time you neuter...plus you want to wait until growth plates have finished growing...research on new protocols on neutering....it has now been shown to have negative effects if done at a very early age....

A mini, teacup, runt, undersized is asking for trouble while it may be healthy hopefully the risks are great I assure you my teapot oversized 12.2 yorkie can do all and more a 2.2 pounder can and much more safely.

I don't want to talk you out of a yorkie, but please read learn and ask here for a bit.

Not only make sure this is the right descision but the right timing.

So many with busy schedules don't realize the commitment it takes and often post about potty training, behavioral, illness or sadly rehoming issues.

The commitment is a lifetime of time, effort, consistancy, and cost.

A basement apt is fine its more about daily life expectations and the financial impact...should you need $500a in vet care can you afford it...many medical issues exceed 5k, are you also prepared for that right now?

Vacation traveling with pet, boarding, grooming yorkies are high maintance in grooming, yorkies are known as the #1 attention seeking breed, being home every night on time maybe on luck to let uour baby eat potty etc.

Also please look into breed traits and issues to ensure if you are ready this is the right breed for you personally.

Best of luck...after all this you'll have to start researching breeders!!!!
