how old can she be to be spayed? my yorkie is 5 months old and is 2 pounds can she be spayed yet? my breeder told me at 6 months but im really worried about it. |
my lil dolly keylo whos a rescue was spayed at 12 or 14 weeks and she did ok but i would have waited if i had the choice. health wise its not the safest. i waited until cedric was 9 months and almost 5 pounds. unless it has to be done for a medical reason i would say you could wait and i believe ive read on here some parents wait until first heat. |

I usually say about 8 months, only bc they have some more time to fill out, and if any baby teeth haven't come out, you will know by 8 months approx that if they're still there, they aren't gonna come out on their own. Some vets like to do it at 4 months. I had a foster who had it done at 4 months. At one year when I started fostering him, he had almost a complete double set of teeth. If the vet had waited to see what teeth would have fallen out, that could have been avoided. |
I would say 6 months but I would wait until she is older to try and get her above 3 pounds. Also make sure you get the blood work before a spay. |
I was advised but some knowledgeable people here to wait until their growth plates had closed up. I did this with Kyra and she is scheduled for a week from Monday. She went through her first heat at 6 months which was a shock for me but she did fine. My vet likes to wait till they are 3lbs but Kyra we don't think will ever be so they ran her tests and said they believe she is healthy enough. |
I would ask my vet. Rosie was 7 months old I think. Maybe 8, I can't remember. But I went by what my vet suggested. |
I had always thought that they needed to be done before their first heat so I had Mandie's done at 6 months. I sooo wish I'd waited until 8 months because the vet said it was too early to see if and how many of her baby teeth would need to be pulled. Now, she has at least 2 canines that need to be pulled so she's going to have to go back under to get that done. I'm not happy about that at all. I found another vet since then and he said that he almost always waits until after the first heat to spay small dogs. ...Mandie has a new vet now, obviously. |
When does first heat happen? Does it all depends on pup? |
I had Zoey spayed at around 9 mos. I'm sure she was due to come in heat by that time. She had one or two baby teeth removed at the same time. I just wanted to wait as long as possible so she would weigh more. You never know when they will come in heat. Each one is different. |

I would let her gain some more weight and maturity. Be prepared to take special care if she does go into heat. She should be ready by the time she is about a year. |

Toy breeds can come in early to heat at say 6mths, but more often anytime after 8 mths old. For any dog I recommend waiting until the growth plates close, and for females that usually means at least one heat has passed, as growth plates close in small breed dogs anywhere from 8mths to after one year old. There is no guess work; just have a lateral view of the tibia done, this is the last growth plate to close; if it hasn't closed then wait longer before spaying. This delay at least gives you some time to see what baby teeth don't come out on their own, and for the tinies some time for a bit more weight gain. As someone mentioned as a female dog owner you need to be vigilant to insure her safety through her first heat. |
Emy is 7 1/2 months old, I had an appointment on November 5 with the vet to be spayed, I was of course nervous, she looked a little swollen to me so I cancelled the appointment and sure enough on the 8th she started really licking and had a little blood, so wouldn't you know it she came into heat the same week I had the spay appointment, she is still in heat, not bleeding but still swollen and licking, not as much, but this would be her 2nd week, so she is in heat then a week going out, and they say to wait 6 weeks after a heat to spay so her hormones and the swelling can go down, so know I'm into late January or February, I might wait till spring now, so the weather won't be so cold. |
