Joys of vermin hunters I heard a HUGE commotion in the yard tonight. I left the sliding door open while the dogs were going potty after eating. I couldn't beleive Scoobers and Princess were in a fight. I closed the kids in the house and Elvis rushed out with me just in time to see what was going on. Scoobers had a large rat wriggling from his mouth and Princess was yanking it away. It was over pretty quickly. I literally ended up having Scoobers by the scruff of his neck and Princess under my arm packing them into the house, I never have to give Elvis a command to follow but did tonight. Blood all over both their muzzles, cleaned up. Put on some antibiotic ointment after washing and using hydrogen peroxide. Scoobers seems to have some light scratches, maybe from Princess trying to get it from his mouth and Princess has a single scratch under her chin. Anything else I should do? Thinking I'll call the vet first thing in the morning my dogs are UTD on rabies not lepto though...I think I did a good job of cleaning and disinfecting all possible scratches or bites. |
I think the vet is a good idea after a tangle with a rat fighting for its life. If it did bite, there might be something else that needs doing to help ensure your little ratters don't get sick. |
Yuck yuck yuck.... Ok let's stop the breeding to make them tiny and focus on breeding to remove the rat hunter instinct :) |

Maybe, but that wouldn't help these two. Scoobers is a schnorkie, yorkie mini schnauzer f1 hybrid. Princess is a mini schnauzer. |

Last time the vet just said a mouse can do very little and as long as they seemed unaffected they'd be fine, but I still am concerned rats are so dirty. I swear it must be the size of a small yorkie, I can't beleive how big it is...and how bad it smells! |

Scoobers is a pup mill dumpee I got from apound. He's the totally undesirable result of the mix, short double coat yorkie body shape but schnauzer size and all the determined destructive naughtiness with spaz out attacks and endurance...he's the best dog ever though! If he hadn't been DNA'd I'd doubt he's a schnorkie. |

We call them city rats also known as water rats. They are as big as cats. I can handle snakes but mice and rats  Off to the vet. I hope they are both ok. |
I might not be as concerned about a tiny mouse as I would a burly rat but a skin puncture is still a puncture and can instill germs into his system. I don't even know what the vet would do if there were a bite but I'd think they'd give antibiotics prophylactically. "Course your vet will be able to tell you if you or he needs to do anything. |
Called the vet. Apparently inducing vommiting with hydrogen peroxide was an option but too late by the time I called. Vet wants to give all dogs who came on contact a blood panel to ensure nothing was transfered and I can drop them off for observation if I want. I had a Dr's apointment so I asked Derik to take them in for a blood draw. I'm annoyed he just told me despite saying he would earlier, I'm overreacting because of my yorkie yacking and he didn't do it! Guess they'll be going in the morning instead its like $25 to ensure their safe and the vet agreed earlier rodents carry way too much to risk it. Vet offered to test rat if I bring it in too. Everyone is acting and looks fine except seriously whining to go out constantly now and more focused on scouting sniffing around the yard instead of doing their potty business. Elvis is actually the worst atm grunt moaning at the slider, apparently he's upset he missed out last night. |

My schnauzers killed opossoms, squirrels, ground hogs and a rabbit. I made sure they had any cuts cleaned and used whatever the vet said when I called about them fighting and killing stuff. They kept the yard safe! LOL! I did feel bad for the rabbit, and I didn't like them hunting skunks... |

Hope you took them up on having the rat tested! |
ugh yuck, a rat!!! ewww ewwww eeeewwww!!! I always step outside before my boys to survey the yard before letting them out. The other night I banged on the door and stepped out and a HUGE possum was right near the door just in my blind spot. I calmly stepped back in and shut the door and me and my boys watched it cross the yard, waddling slowly the WHOLE width of the yard. They were going ballistic!!!! As soon as it got out of the yard, I let them out and they BULLETTED to the other side of the yard where it got out and it was so hard to get them to potty nevermind come back in. LOL |
We left the rat in the trash, probably not the best choice, but I literally got sick from the smell opening the can. Dogs donated some blood. Princess didn't even notice, but was annoyed her leg was held. Scoobers screamed like a banshee swear he scared all the dogs in the waiting room, quite the ordeal, he was soft muzzled and nipped at the vet tech! I gave him a treat in the car because he is such a baby he limped all the way to the car!! Their scratches aren't ecen scabbed nothing given just continue antibiitic ointment for safety and observe behavior for lethargy, signs of excessive drinking etc. Vet wanted to keep them for observation...until Scoober's scene then was fine with sending them home-go figure. Should hear back if there's any issues after panel is completed. |
Oh when we got home Elvis was livid...he apparently didn't care we went to the vet, he should have been invited too! He's been sniffing and licking Princess and Scoobers to the point Princess kenneled herself to get away from him and Scoobers is now on Milo's bed where Elvis can't jump up. Poor Elvis is missing out on all the action. |
