new puppies I have two puppies one a 11 1/2 yorkie and the other a 7 1/2 week old shis tzu terrier mix I live in Chicago I was wondering should I start outside training now or wait till spring:animal-pa |
I would start now. I think that the sooner you start the better and the easier it will be. Train them now to like the outside and all different weather conditions and they'll most likely be fine with any they come across. I got Blazer this past July and it was cool and rainy his entire first week here but we were still outside for potty every 1/2 hour that first day! We just had our first snow fall here and it didn't bother him at all. |
If you have your on privet yard and no other dogs go on it you can train them now but if not you really need to wait until they have had all of there shots. |
I have a fenced In yard no other dog can geti. I wasn't sure because the one time I took them out they were not very happy and they were freezing |

Yes ive tryed a sweater and a coat she trys to take both off and sit and whines untill we go In my shih tzu on the other hand will run around neither one of them will go potty |
You will have trouble as the winter progresses. We have had some bitter winters here and I'm sure it is worse where you are. If you pad train them and want to switch them in the spring time you should keep at least one pad near the door you would use to take them out. I pad trained Gracie at first. When she got older I started walking her frequently and she started pottying outside. Some people take the pad outside with them to teach the dog to start going outside but I did not find that necessary with Gracie. I still keep a pad inside for when I am away or if she has to go during the night. She also still uses the pad when the weather is bad and I don't want to take her out in it. Personally, I find the pad convenient. Some Yokies have very thin coats with no undercoat. It takes time to get a sweater or coat on a puppy to take them. Puppies usually cannot wait that long before they have to go unless you take them out very frequently. |
I would start now and start good habits the younger one will follow and do as the older one |
I would start now. I got Troy at 12 weeks in October. Winter was approaching so I thought it best to use an expen and potty pads. Let's just say it worked temporarily. I crated trained, got on a schedule and stated taking him outside. Consistency is key and now my boy is potty trained for outdoors. Because he small, in the colder months he is quick to potty but needs his little hoodie on to stay warm. This may be a personality quirk but he doesn't like it when it rains so he just holds it until it stops. |
Hi and welcome. Also when you do take them out for now it is only for them to go potty. Not playing. I would take them on a leash. Bring them where you want them to go potty and stand there. When they are in the middle of going otty say go poo or tinkle or whatever you want to use. When they finish cheer and make a big deal and give them a treat. Also maybe bring out a small piece of their scent from a potty pad so they have their sent more willing to go if they smell it. |
Thank you all for the great advice I'm still taking them out once an hour during The day still no potty. But we will keep trying. :yorkiesar |
