New Yorkie mom!
 

I'm getting a Yorkie on 12/9! I have so many questions so I'm reading some of the very helpful threads here. My main concern now is finding a vet. I saw that PetSmarts have a Banfield pet hospital. Does anyone recommend them? Are they any good or should I look for a vet elsewhere? I really like that they have weekend hours. This is my first Yorkie and my first dog as an adult so any advice tips or input is welcomed.

I would research some other vets. I noticed you said your location is Charlotte NC. This is a pretty populated area and I am sure you will be able to find a reputable vet. Are you getting your puppy from Charlotte? Maybe your breeder can give you some suggestions. What about co-workers or friends with pets. I found out about my vet 9 years ago from my then potential groomer. I still have the same groomer and the same vet. You may try calling around or googling some vets in your area.

I noticed that you want a vet with weekend hours. When you start researching make sure you find out if the vet has weekend hours. I live in a small town and my vet is open one Saturday per month . I am sure you will not have any problems finding a vet that has some type of week end schedule.

Glam Chic, congratulations on your puppy. You will love having a yorkie. Is your puppy a boy or girl? I have a little girl. She will be a year old on 12/8. It is very exciting getting a new puppy. I also have a bichon that is 8 years old. Both my girls are something else. They are polar opposites but they are so wonderful. I look forward to hearing your stories and questions!

I take Trixie there, her vet is great it is a female vet and she is a Yorkie owner.

congrats on the new puppy. We just got our puppy too. She is 5 months old. We will be taking her to an all natural pet health vet. This vet came highly recommended by our good friends. I can't wait to take her to the vet so we can finally get a haircut.

Congrats on your new upcoming baby and Welcome to YT. I would search for vets that specialize in small breed dogs. There should be a few in Charlotte. Most vets have saturday hours, I think (around here they do anyway)

Welcome to YT. Congratulations on your new baby. I highly recommend you read Yorkshire terrier for dummies it is a great book with lots of info.

I have heard nothing but very bad thing about them and I would never trust them with my baby.

No, I'm getting her from SC. Could not find a good breeder in NC :( My friends take their vets to shelters to get their shots and Banfield. But I want a good vet.

Many vets have weekend or emergency hours. If you know someone who has a small dog check where they go. You want a vet that has experience working with small dogs and especially Yorkies. Yorkies come with their own set of problems. There are several genetic problems that are prevalent in the Yorkie and a vet that has worked with the breed should be familiar with them and know what symptoms to look for and alert you.

Personally, I would stay away from any type of "chain" vet service. Also pet stores are not the best at providing quality pet care or products.

I have bandfield's puppy plan thing for my German shepherd because I didn't have a specific vet for all of his puppy shots, which I did with Sammy, my yorkie. I have had a really good experience there and the cost of the plan that includes all of the shots, unlimited anytime vet visits and fecal exams was really worth it for me because I didn't know what to expect with such a large dog, and ll the shots they need separately can be really pricey! It is also nice to know that if Remy is ever sick I can just run him over there and they will check him out and doa fecal test to make sure there isn't anything wrong... But if he already had all of his shots it doesn't seem like the best deal... They do have a free first office visit coupon online tho so you should definitely try it out to see if the office by you is one you would like... They will try to sell you the puppy plan but it never hurts to get another professional to take a look at your new baby! Also if you are planning on getting a spay/ neuter they have a plan that let's you pay a little each month and when that terrible time comes they have all the anesthesia, monitors and pain meds included for you... All of this is just research I have already done so I hope to save you a little time because I have had a nice experience with them and they always take time to answer any questions I have and my babies like it there because they know they will always sucker mommy into buying a new toy ;) hope this helps!
