how to tell How can I tell if my breeder is a good one or bad? I never questioned it until I started reading here...now I feel super cautious. I went to the mall and fell in love with this sweet puppy but I knew pet store puppies are not always best. Plus the woman was so pushy, my husband actually stepped in and told her to back off. So we went home and found a local yorkie breeder and visited. All their dogs are well taken care of. They have a nice fenced yard and an extra house for the women in heat, and the house has a yard too. They know the personalities of all the dogs and even though they have a lot know the history of them all. I just want to be sure that I'm not supporting the wrong type of breeder. TIA! |
What did the breeder tell you? When do they let their pups leave their mom? Guarantee? You can also get the name of the breeder and search. Lots of times there will be information posted about the breeder somewhere. |
I agree with BabyGirl Rosie: research the breeder's name on the internet and read the health guarantee very closely. The houses and yards -- did you see these firsthand or just pictures on the internet? I would ask to visit and meet the pup's parents. Some bad breeders make everything look pretty on their websites to fool people looking for a puppy. Ideally the puppies will be AKC registered and the breeder will only have Yorkies. If the breeder has several breeds, I recommend looking elsewhere. Here are some more tips in the YT library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...e-breeder.html Best wishes in your search. |
I went to the house and am able to visit whenever I want. I've actually brought Joey back to visit because they wanted to see him. They have akc and Biewer yorkies. |
Well that is good. Did you google the breeder and see if you find out any reviews. Does she give a guarantee? |
How many dogs do they have? Do they live in the house or in kennels? Did they show you a pedigree? How about vet references and references from other buyers? You already bought from this person before? How old is your guy now and how has he done since you had him? I know that is a of questions but there is a lot to consider. If this person has a lot of dogs she could very well be selling to pet stores and "boutiques." |
Pet store puppies are from puppy mills so you did great by not getting a puppy from there. I am leery of people who have an extra "house" for there yorkies because I would want a pup who is raised around other people. I would make sure the pups are AKC, the parents had genetic testing, health guarantee, that she does not have a big amount of breeding dogs, that she does not breed mixes, that she doesn't have a lot of litters ready at one time, that her breeding females are not under 5 pounds, that the pups do not go home before 12 weeks and that they are growing up in a clean and decent place. |

They come with a 1 yr health guarantee. They also get a health certificate from the vet, and the first set of shots. They ship all over, but mostly down in the southern states..but only once the puppy has reached 2 lbs. They also say in the contract that it is up to the breeder when to give the puppy to the owner but usually 8 weeks. I picked up Joey at 8 weeks, and he was so tiny but she gave me instructions on how to care for him, and what to look for with hypoglycemia. They have a separate house because there are many dogs, but they have them as pets as well as breeding. Theres a few that arent even used. One (I swear I would take her in a heartbeat!!), is so adorable and if you are over there and arent paying attention to her she would bark at you 1 time..then she will go splash her face in water and rub all over haha!! They gave me a health certificate with Joey, and his pedigree they made and the other one...cant remember the name. Its not CKC. I just want to say I dont think I have a bad breeder, just wanted to make sure. I feel like I am defending her but I just wanted to make sure there isnt something that Ive missed. I am about to google. |
The only thing google gave me was their website and a yt link. I read through that and it seems there are legit happy people. Im happy with my puppy so thats all that matters <3 |
