SO Scared!! She's only 10 oz!
 

My Chloe comes home after her last set of shots on 12/8. Im picking her up from a puppy store, so i didnt really get to see her breeders, mom or dad. She was born on 08/18/2012 and only weighs 10 oz. She is a absolute doll, she's spunky and energetic, but she is sooooo small. I will have a section of the house closed off with gates so that no one accidentally bumps into her, but none the less, im still scared. Scared of her size and hopeful that she doesnt have any health issues. Fingers crossed!! Any comments, suggestions on when i bring her home?

How much does she weigh now?

Hi, Welcome to YT. You came to the right place to get good information on caring for your new little girl, Chole. Even though I had yorkies before I learned so much from YT members and you will too! I hope you will listen to what they say. They have a lot of experience and some are breeders. My opinion would be to buy an x-pen or crate to keep her in. My last yorkie was crate trained and my new pups are in an x-pen with food, water, pee pad and their bed. So far it's working well. I bought the x-pen on Amazon. Good luck with your new pup!

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Yorkie puppies grow very fast during their first 12 weeks. By December 8 when you pick her up, she could be a much more comfortable 2+ pounds.

I agree with Barkelylove's suggestion for an xpen. That was the first thing I went out and bought when I brought Max home.

Make sure you get an ironclad health guarantee and take your pup immediately to the vet for a wellness check.

Congrats on your pup. Please arrange to have her seen by your vet ASAP after picking her up. I've read too many stories of puppies from puppy stores getting very sick once getting home.

I agree. Please make sure there is a health guarantee. If not I would serious rethink getting the pup. Most of all you want a healthy pup.

We all care about everyone here. We re a big yorkie family. we have seen too many pups sick coming from pet stores, byb, and greeders. We are saying these things to you to make sure you do not have the heartache that many have had. Hugs

Buying from a pet store is very bad all pet store pups come from puppy mills or in some cases extremely bad breeders. No reputable breeder would give there pups to a pet store to sell because they want to know and meet who is getting there pups. Getting a pet store pup also means they didn't do genetic testing and you could very well end up with a very sick pup or a pup who gets sick later on down the line with a genetic illness. Buying a pup for a puppy mill supports puppy mills and the pain and torture that there parents go through. Please research puppy mills and see if you still want to buy your puppy from there and to support that. My Callie came from a puppy mill I didn't know about brokers and such and that is who I bought her from and when I found out more about puppy mills I looked up the name of who was on Callie's papers and sure enough it ended up being a puppy mill. Callie has LP one of which has had to be operated on and cost over $3,000 and she is going to have to have the other one operated on as well she also has bad skin issues, she has a very strange hypoglycemic episodes that the reason for them cannot be diagnosed and collapsing trachea. She also turned out to be 16 pounds. Puppy mill pups can end up costing you a lot of money. I could not imagine my life with out Callie but I do feel so bad for the life her parents must be or did live.

I definitely think an expen is essential for a puppy. Puppies should not have free range of the house until they are completely potty trained. This will also help keep the puppy safe from being stepped.

I am sad to hear that you got your dog from a pet store, but by coming here... Hopefully you will learn about reputable breeders and never purchase a puppy mill puppy again.

You have decided to buy from a pet store so you are taking chances. Yes, your puppy will be quite a bit bigger buy the time you get her but none the less it is a small breed dog so precautions need to be taken. There is no way to know how big it will be since you do not know the parents.

Make sure you get her to a vet right away for a very good check up. Many of the issues that puppy mill dogs have do not manifest until they are older. Make sure your vet knows what the most prevalent problems with Yorkies are so they can tell you what symptoms to watch for.

I guess I am a little confused....this baby was born 12 weeks ago and only weighs 10 0z? Kyra only weighs 2.8 at almost a year old and at 12 weeks was 1.4 I cannot imagine one half that size. Good luck with her. Please have the vet check her thoroughly. Have her check her frontal also to make sure it is closed, as well as the rest of her. Welcome to YT.

You have not gotten your pup yet? Honestly if there was anything at all that I could say to you to make you change your mind I surely would. I can't tell you how large and possibly costly this gamble is that your taking...I suggest you spend the day reading all the links and threads about WHY you shouldn't purchase a dog from a pet store...

Puppy mill pups (this is what your purchasing) more times than not are riddled with hereditary diseases and conditions...Veterinarian care often times exceeds what the average person can afford.

My Miss Mini is 8 years old, as of 3 weeks ago, I have been to the vet 93 times, Miss Mini has been hospitalized more times than I can count, and we have spent well over $30,000 on her care, I am not in the least exaggerating here; infact, I'm definitely understating...she has had 3 major surgeries, needs 2 more that I am aware of, has to have shots every 2 weeks, pepcid daily and sucralfate daily, requires steroids and antibiotics constantly. Let me just add one other thing, I am not in the least an over reactor, I have been scolded more than once for waiting to bring Miss Mini in...I have since given up trying to care for her ailments myself and upon symptomatic behaviors I take her right in.

When you buy from pet stores unknowingly you are a victim of treacherous, heartless money hungry soulless pieces of crap; when you purchase from a pet store knowing the information you now know...you are doing a disservice to many more puppies, the movement to stop these people from there cruel and inhumane, unethical treatment of animals...PLEASE RECONSIDER.

P.S. I am on my way to the Emergency Vet that I can't afford because Miss Mini is feverish, nauseated and lethargic...stay tuned for more details...

Your baby is off the charts as far as size goes. By that I mean that the growth charts don't account for one that small at that age! For instance a pup projected to be 2 Lbs. grown would be weighing 15 oz. by now.
