tails I was thinking about getting a new puppy. But a black/tan orblack/gold yorkie this time. However I know akc standards mean their tails have to be cut. I have a Biewer yorkie without his tail docked and I kind of like it. Would it be rude or crazy to ask the breeder to not doc my puppy's tail? It would be the same people I bought my current little man from :) |
I don't think it would be rude or crazy to ask. It's not a necessary thing to do and really serves no purpose anyway...so if it's a pet and you don't care about "standards" then why dock a tail? I'd ask if I was paying ;) |
I think you would probably have to pay for the puppy ahead of time if the breeder usually docks the tails. If that is your preference and you don't mind buying the pup sight unseen I guess it would work. |
I definitely don't think it's rude or crazy to ask for an un-docked tail, I just think you would have to ask the breeder before the puppies are born so they aren't docked before you get to them :) I have a yorkie with a docked tail and another whose was not docked. I personally prefer the un-docked look... She uses her tail to express herself and it's so cute! |
I agree I love the undocked tails. I am hoping the AKC would change their standard. European countries outlawed docking of tails. |
Both my yorkies are docked- rather short, same vet in town did both! I never thought much about it with Ziva, her little "nub" doesn't move much and points down, I'm not sure she would have had much except a dragging tail. Abby, on the other hand, has a busy little "tail" that is deeply connected to her backbone, she certainly lost a lot of her personality when her tail was docked.I'm sure it would have been held high! |
I would ask them too not dock it also. I like them undocked just because it's how they come:) But I have to admit I do love Joels "stub"hehe |
As a breeder, I can say I would not be the least bit offended if someone asked I not dock their baby's tail. The problem is, most tails are docked by day 3....and there is only about 15% of people looking for Yorkies that do NOT want their tails docked. Therefore, if anyone wants a baby to keep its tail, they will have to pay for that baby up front, as the chance I can turn around and sell that baby to someone else is diminished greatly....and I can hear it now, they would be wanting the baby discounted because it never had its tail "properly docked". That would become a "problem" for them, and they would be "doing me a favor purchasing that baby". I always dock my tails a little longer, just in case that 3 day old developes into a show prospect.....people hav even made comment negative on that!!! I think those tails are adorable, and I will love it if the weight ever shifts to having tails remain undocked! So ask your breeder to leave your babys tail undocked, but be prepared to pay up front for the baby. |
I wouldn't mind going the day they're born or the day after and picking a puppy. Or even trusting they pick one for me. I also don't mind putting a deposit down and paying the remainder at 8 weeks...that's how I did it with Joey. I picked him at 3 weeks old. The breeder is really nice and let me come visit every other week lol. But I just didn't want to step over boundaries with the akc. |
I asked that Blazer's tail not be docked but because it was so early the breeder wasn't certain that he was the one I'd want by the time the pups were ready so she had all of them docked. I knew from the VERY begining that Blazer was going to be MY pup but it's ok, his little stumpy is cute and he still likes to chase it. There is a Yorkie in the area who is not docked and I LOVE it's tail! SOOOOO CUTE!!!!! |
I wanted a Yorkiepoo cause my best friend has one and his tail is docked. Couldn't find a Yorkiepoo and went and saw my little Morkie Amy and just fell in love with her little tail when she was wagging it at us. She is just a pet and is adorable with that tail. Do what you want and don't let them talk you into anything else. |
My first yorkie, Gina, had a docked tail. Her little stubber always seemed sensitive on the end. When I got Zoey I didn't notice that her tail was longer until someone made a comment that she had a long tail. I called the breeder (rather put out) and asked why her tail wasn't docked and she said it was but to a "medium length". That it is and it is a beautiful tail with long hair that looks like a happy flag. I would always wish for a longer tailed yorkie in the furture. Her little tail expresses so many of her feelings. Just LOVE it. |
If your breeder will let you see them the day they are born you will see some tiny babies that look pretty much the same. Color changes as they get older usually. All they do is sleep and eat for the first two weeks so it is hard to get a great deal of insight into the personality. Since they generally dock around the 3rd day after birth you would still be making a decision that is not based on much knowledge of the puppy. Some people who know the breeder and love the line they are breeding will do that just to get a puppy on the waiting list. If they breed consistently quality pups then there is no harm in it. |
Keep the tail I am in the UK and it is against the law to dock tails, even if it weren't I would want my dog to have a long waggily tail. Alfie's tail curls up and never stays still and he has such fun when he chases it and can actually catch it. Should be your choice to keep the tail. |

I don't think it is exceptionally cruel to dock tails since it is not much more than having a skin tag removed when they are about 3 days old. If done properly it is quick and easy. If done by someone who has no interest in the breed or the standard it can be a real problem. |
