Puppy fencing the outside yard fence question? We have a very large back yard that is fenced with chainlink. The whole fence is about 1/3 acre or more. The chainlink is old and we have had Shelties and they were old enough not to go under the fence. With little Amy being only 12 weeks old and about 3 pounds I want to puppy proof the fence with something on the inside that will go all the way to the ground. The fence itself is sloped downward and there are spots where she could get out very easy. What would you suggust we use to puppy proof it with? Chicken wire or something like it? Until we get it puppy proofed one of us takes her outside on a lease and harness to potty. She will never be alone at any time because we have woods all around us with coyotes, deer, fox and other four legged critters not to mention in the winter we are close to a river and now I worry about the eagles wanting to grab her. Thanks for any suggestions anybody has. |
hmm.. Well personally we never let Waffles free roam our yard. She goes potty in her exercise pen on the grass, or inside the house on her potty pad and we stay outside with her. Around here its not just rodents, racoons, possums, birds, koyotes, hawks, owls, its PEOPLE that I have to protect her from. :( So We never let her run free in our yard. Ive had many people peer over our (from city sidewalk) 8 foot tall wall into our yard( wall from inside our yard is only 5 feet tall) in the 15 years weve lived here. So anyways, Id not let pup free roam. But thats me. |
Definetly keep a close eye on your tiny baby:D You could make a spot in the corner of the yard with chicken wire so she can potty in a secure spot but without free roaming since she so tiny:) It could also teach her to potty in one spot when she's older |
Hi there. I have about the same size yard as you do. I also have a sheltie/mix older dog. I discovered there were places in our fence that came up off the ground in some spots. Actually...it was where the neighbors wood, privacy fence meets our chain link fence. Anyway, I just went to the hardware store and got several 2x4's. This solved my problem very well. Your issue sounds a tad different. I would actually try chicken wire, too. I think that would work pretty well. I let Mandie run as she pleases outside because she loves chasing her big brother. However, I'm always out there with her and she is always "close" as I watch the skies for birds of prey. |
When Callie was a puppy and we needed to puppy proof around the deck, fence and sheds we used a thick black chicken wire and it held up very well and Callie never messed with it. |
I agree on the chicken wire! |
When we would take Simon to my parents house, he would always find an exit hole in their chain link fence. My dad ended up running chicken wire around the entire fence line on the inside. This completely prevented Simon from escaping the yard. |
We have an average size yard. We put chicken wire all along the bottom about 2 feet up and buried about 4 inches. We have our deck closed off from the yard except for a small portion of bark in a flower bed. Lexi only gets to run free in the whole yard with the chicken wire when someone is there with her. The rest of the time and especially at night (since we have owls) she only gets to be on the deck. We have some outdoor carpet strips for her to potty on. She seems to like her space. |
I like all these ideas but maybe the yard is to big for her to run in. I am thinking of just fencing in a small part of it with chicken wire for her to play and potty in. Can always go and clean the area after she does go potty. Didn't realize all the things that could happen to her if left to roam the whole fenced in area. We are always out there with her so that is no problem. Thanks for your hints and tips. |
