New Mom with New Baby Boy Hello all! :) So glad I found this forum...I have gotten a lot of useful information already! My little baby Milo (pronounce Melo not Mylo) came to us 2 days before his 8 week birthday. The first few days all he did was sleep, he was really shy and quit which is understandable he was so little and missed his 2 litter mates and mommy. Now after the storm, his personality is coming through and he is smart as can be :p ! He's having a bit of trouble house training though..trying my best to stay positive and patient :confused:. His eating is all over the place too...he doesn't eat in one sitting, he'll take a bite and leave come back eat and do this for the whole day until his bowl is empty...is this normal? Should I take the bowl away from him to attempt and get him on a schedule? |
I think the whole schedule thing depends on your lifestyle. If you are home with the pup all of the time you don't need to make a set schedule, you can let their natural schedule develop. If you NEED a schedule, then by all means, get started on it as soon as possible! Food, mixed reviews on that around here- there is currently another thread about that. I put food out in the morning and let my pup eat as he needs/wants- but he only gets 1/2 cup per day. He had been just grazing throughout the day and that was great but now he is starting to eat the entire allowance by noon, so I'll be rationing him so that he has some throughout the day again. I stay home all day with my kids and dogs so I have always let their natural schedules develop and keep them very easy going and up for anything. Some people and dogs do better with set schedules. You'll figure out soon enough what works for you. Best of luck, congrats on your pup, and welcome to YT! =) |
Also have two more questions: 1) I bough a soft crate thinking it would be warmer and nicer to sleep in but bites the cloth and with his little nails is already beginning to break it. I went out and purchased the Petmate Deluxe Pet Tax Small, which is for little ones up to 10lbs. I weighed him yesterday and he is 4.2lbs...should I return the crate and get the next size up? I don't want him to outgrow the crate! His parents are 7 & 8lbs but if he's only 9 weeks and 4.2lbs already...I think he's going to be a big boy. 2) How can I get him to sleep through the night? I know puppies need to get up and pee but he gets up wanting to play several times a night. I try to keep him up after 6-7pm but it just breaks my heart when his little eyes close and he wants nothing to do but sleep. |
I'm not going to be much help with the crate thing, Blazer is as big now as I thought he'd get and he's only 5 months old! I'm afraid that he is going to outgrow his crate, too, but the others I find always seem TOO big! As for sleeping through the night I had really good luck by making sure Blazer went potty before bed then covering his kennel at bedtime. The first couple of weeks I had him in a downstairs bathroom so it was dark and quiet but the first couple of nights he'd wake up once to potty. I treated him like I did my kids when they would wake at night- no play, just potty then back to bed. After I moved the kennel next to my bed Blazer started sleeping longer in the morning, which was awesome! He was sleeping through the night after having him at home only two nights, it was great! |

try putting the crate close to you at nite and see if that works and put something in there that smells like you, chester never done the crate thing but this seems to work for alot of people, they like to be next to there humans espevcially since they just left mom, they are wonderful dogs, I love my chester more than life itself. Oh yeah! I put a baby blanket in the bottom of Blazer's kennel and I slept with two of them (need a backup in case of accidents!) before he came home so that they'd smell like me. A teeshirt that you've slept in for a while would work the same way. (I did this for my human babies, too! I can't believe I spaced on mentioning it earlier!) |
i feed my keylo 4 small meals a day but as long as he eating as much as he should and its not getting sour being left out then i say its not a bad thing. with potty training did you try potty pads in your tub? thats how i do it. i put keylo in after every meal when we get up and when i think she is looking for a spot. its confined and helps them understand what you are trying to teach them...for us its worked anyway. good luck there are many methods its just finding the one that works best for you and ur furr kid. |
You don't want to get a crate that is too big either...if its too big she may want to use her crate to potty in, she will simply move away from her mess, if there is room. All that is needed is for her to be able to stand up, and stretch out comfortably. I have a medium size Kennel Cab...technically it is too big for Jersey, the small pet taxi is the right size for her. She is 41/2mths old and weighs in at 5lbs already. She is gonna be a little larger than standard I think...the crate I have holds two yorkies quite comfortably. |
