Spaying... What is the best and safest age for me to spay my Amirah? |
I would best talk with the vet. A lot of people have their little ones teeth done at the same time so she will not have to be put under 2x. |
That's a good question. There is controversy about timing (to wait until after 1st heat or not) which I can't really answer. My Lucy is 8 months. I'm having her done during the winter school break so that we all can be home with her as she mends. I hope she doesn't go into heat before then. Good luck. Tracey |
I agree, the best answer will come from your vet. However, with that said, we got Mandie spayed at 6 months and I planned on them doing any baby teeth during that time, but the vet said she still had a bit to go on the teeth. So, now, I'm going to probably have to put her under again in a couple of months if her stubborn canines don't fall out (she has all baby and adult on those now). I wish I had let her just go thru her first heat cycle and waited on the spaying. |
My vet had said around six months, but I wasn't sure. I knew people with more specialized interest in different breeds will typically have other advice, so I wanted to check. |

About 6 months is more or less accurate, but it may also depend upon how your baby develops. Good luck. Tracey |
There are a few schools of thought about spaying. I had a Maltese puppy several years back that contracted Pyometra (a uterine infection) during her first heat at 6 months. She almost died so after that I always got females spayed before the first heat. Gracie was a different story. She was a little squirt and I was concerned about having her spayed when she was till so small. I waited until she was about a year old before I had her spay done. You do need to check for retained baby teeth to see if they are going to need to be removed. Talking to the vet is always a good idea. Make sure the vet has experience doing surgery on small dogs and that they understand possible Yorkie issues. |
I know my vet has done tea cups before and my big girl...almost six pounds at five months certainly is no tea cup....I just wanted others opinions as well as hers |
I had my Lola B spayed at 7 months old and my little girl spayed at 6 months old and they both had baby teeth pulled while under and their microchips. Good luck. |
I would wait until your puppy's growth plates close to minimize the risks to her. http://caninecollege.biz/PUPPY_Spay-Neuter.pdf |
Nena is 9 months and 5.4lbs. I took her to the vet today because her gums are red and swollen. Also she has been scratching a lot and I figured she might has allergies. The vet gave her an antibiotic shot and a cortisone for itching. Antibiotics for 10 days. Also gave Nena Temaril-P. She needs to have her baby teeth extracted. I want to spay her and have her baby teeth done at the same time. My concern is should I wait till I finish her the meds she is on now to set a date for spaying. The vet says I can do it next week but I don't feel comfortable spaying her while she is still taking meds. Should I wait till her meds are finished and gums better? |
Lucy was just spayed last week. She was pretty out of it the first day but picked up and was just about normal in a day and 1/2. My vet gave her pain meds (tramadol & an antiinflamatory.) If the meds are not contraindicated with the antibiotic, you may want to do the spaying. And, if she's scratching, you'll get a nifty cone for her head to prevent picking at the stitches (Lucy didn't need that though.) It may be a win win, so to speak... Good luck. Tracey |

Lots of great information here! Jules is 4 months 3 weeks old and 3.26 lbs... The vet believes that Jules is at least 3 weeks younger than the stated age that the breeder told us when we got her... What to do, what to do. |
