Gizmo is here! Hi guys, Gizmo is sleeping on my lap. :D He's been here all of two hours. He got sick in the car so I decided to let him eat and drink when he got inside. It's been an hour and hasn't "gone" yet. When we go outside to potty he tries to eat grass. I was planning on coming home during lunch to take him out of the crate and feed him. But, if it takes him over any hour to potty I might have to figure something else out. I live in an apartment so when we go outside I want to have him on a leash, but his legs slip through his harness. What should I do?? |
Congrats!!!!! Hmmm...I'd maybe try another harness. Petsmart has a little area within the harnesses for super small ones, maybe try there. He may not be going right away right now both bc of stress and bc he may be a little dehydrated from the stress and travel. I think it'd be great to come home at lunch, bc if he's still really young it'd be a good idea to feed him then too. I used to feed them 4x day when they first got home, then 3x a day as they became more sturdy later, and eventually (like 6-10mths) 2x day. If he does take too long to potty, you could leave a pee pad for him. Do you have a little area/x-pen for him to hang in out while you're gone? I would pen off a little area that would contain water, bed, couple toys, and a pee pad. Just a reminder if you have a collar on him for i.d. - never leave it on when you're not with him, esp when he is a pup! :) Again, congrats! |
Thanks Willy's Mom! I'll try there tomorrow. I think the little guy needs to settle in. We went to the Vet and he got car sick. :( One thing, I don't see him pee! I keep waiting for him no kinda get lower to the ground outside, but he doesn't. The last time, I picked him up and he was wet underneath, so I guess he went. How am I missing it? I don't take my eyes off of him, and even lowered myself so I could see ?? Help. I don't want to miss him if he's trying to pee inside. I've been taking him out after he eats, wakes up, and drink. Thanks |
Welcome and congrats. Can't wait to see a little pic. Also you can check the cat section also for harnesses. I have one for a 8 week old kitten size. |
Congratulations on Gizmo finally being home. He's maybe so young he just pees and doesn't really even try to lower a little yet. I would get him a smaller harness and save that one for when he is bigger. Good luck with him this first weekend. Hope he doesn't howl and cry too much at night! :) |
Hi, Congrats on being a new yorkie mom! My Jada was too small for a harness when she was younger too. It wasnt a problem at potty time because she has an indoor potty but I couldnt take her outside for walks. The best option is to get a harness shirt. Its just a shirt with a hook that you can attach a leash to. Jada used that until she grew big enough for a harness. Google harness shirts and you should be able to find them. Hope this helps! |
Congrats on your new baby. My little Abby was too small for her harness at first too. Petsmart had some Ferret harnesses that were XXS - I got one of those and it worked great. Max, my little guy, does not lift his leg when he pees most of the time. He just kind of stands and lowers his back a little. So funny to see the look on his face for his first morning pee - almost like I can see the relief. I use pee pads with mine since I am gone all day. Abby still prefers the pee pads. When I first got them, I gave them a drop of Nutrical every morning, midday, and evening. Also helpful to have some on hand when you get your baby fixed. With my previous Yorkies, I was able to go home every day for the first few months to check on her and play. With my current two, I had a dog sitter come by everyday around mid-day to check on them and play for about an hour. Have a great weekend with your new fur baby! |
Hello, I don't have anything to add to the wonderful advice and suggestions, but did want to say congrats on getting Gizmo home finally :D. |
Congratulations on your new arrival! Enjoy this special time! :) |

Everything's new to him, he's probably not used to car journeys - and if he's not drinking much, he probably isn't pee-ing too much either :) I'm sure within a few days you'll have it all under control, you'll be more used to one another and things will calm down. I wish you every happiness with your new Littlie :) Sally + Harry x |
Good luck with your baby. Yorkies are the best,he will have you wraped around his little paw that you can count on for sure. |
Hi everyone, Thanks for the warm wishes and advice. I do have an exercise pen. He went in there and used the pee pad right after I took him outside. lol I was just happy that he willingly went in there and is seeming to know it's his. I ended up going to Petsmart and getting a kitten harness, it fits perfectly. Thanks for telling me about that. I also got him a bell, he got stepped on earlier. :( I'm not trying to make him into a cat, but hey, whatever works. :) I finally saw him pee! lol Never thought I'd get so excited about poop and pee. I took him outside this morning from his crate and he went immediately! Yea, Gizmo!!! I was so proud! I think we're getting a hang of it. :p |
Woooo Hooooo!!! :) I don't know - the things that make us happy.....:D And well done little Gizmo, managing to 'go' outside....congratulations mummy! :) Sally + Harry x |
Well, he doesn't like his exercise pen. I have pee pads, water, food, toys, and crate in there. I put him in there will I was cooking and he went crazing barking...this time he didn't stop quickly. It's early, and I got scared my neighbors could hear. I took him out and put him in his crate and covered in with a towel---and magically he became quiet! I think I saw that on t.v. before. :p I'll try this again if I have too, but I want him to be able to use his exercise pen. Anyone have trouble with that before? |
:D Yep, Harry hated his, too - could little Gizmo see what you were doing....were you in his sight? Sally + Harry x |
