baby teeth Hi all, Monty is now 5 1/2 months old and still has not lost his baby teeth. I think he has lost a couple of the bottom ones but the rest remain intact. What age is normal for them to lose these teeth and does it vary from breed to breed or just dog to dog? |
It varies between dogs. Max had 5 remaining baby teeth pulled when he was neutered at 6 months old, and Teddy had 2 pulled when he was neutered at 7 months. My neighbor's little girl had to have almost her entire set of baby teeth pulled at 1 year of age! |
I agree it varies from dog to dog but I believe its fairly common for yorkies and small breed dogs to have problems with their teeth. I suggest getting your dog neutered and having the baby teeth pulled no later than at a year old. Troy was 3 when he had his first dental and he still had 5 or so retained puppy teeth. This caused his mouth to be terrible. Horrible breath and the vet suggested that because I waited so long that he had bacteria and I put him at risk for some of teeth abcessing or loosing more. Luckily he only lost one adult tooth in addition to the retained puppy teeth but from someone who had to learn the hard way get it taken care of sooner than later. |
My Male Sneakers, retained his Baby K9's for almost a year, WHILE his permanents grew in ahead of them. The whole time there were rock solid, and I had to have them extracted along with a along with a couple other deciduous, during a regular Dental Cleaning. He just didn't want to give them up. My Female Becca, on the other hand, dropped all of her baby teeth on her own. She's 2yo now. lol  PS: The delay in removing Sneakers K9 teeth, was recommended and under the supervision of our Vet. I was a lot more nervous about therm being there, than the Vet was. |
Angel lost all hers by seven months. Margaux is now 7 months and still has quite a few baby teeth. We are playing LOTS of tug. So far everything looks OK but I am checking on a regular basis and will talk to the vet about it the next time we go in. BTW, am I the only one that saves baby teeth? |
I saved my girls baby teeth! Don't tell them that though; they think the tooth fairy took them and gave them a bone! lol Both girls were spayed around 7-8 months old and had their remaining baby teeth pulled. Ally had 13 removed and Tia had two or three; I can't remember. |
My previous Yorkies have always lost their teeth naturally as puppies. The two I have now - different story. Max lost almost all of his baby teeth before he was fixed. He had the remaining ones pulled when he got fixed. Abby only lost the front ones before she was fixed. She had to have the rest of them pulled when she was fixed. Her teeth were so tiny, heck if I could find most of them. |
I have had 10 Yorkies, 4 lost their baby teeth on their own and 6 had to have some or all baby teeth pulled. This observation may mean nothing, but my bigger Yorkies were the ones who lost all the baby teeth on their own. The smaller they were, the more teeth retained. |

thanks for all the great info. I will hold out until I take him to be neutered and then ask our vet if he recommends it. I will also have Monty microchipped then. So much to do so little time :) |
