At what age is the first heat? My baby is 6 months old now. The vet doesn`t want to spay her for at least another month to give her teeth a chance to fall out on their own. She didn`t want her to have a sore mouth and sore tummy at the same time. She said she might have a heat in that time. How will I know. Yesterday she was trying to hump her favorite toy. How often do they go into heat? I would like to wait until after Christmas to have her surgery. TIA. |
Mine is now 8 months and started her first heat yesterday, I am still not sure if I should have her spayed or have a litter at least once. I am really unsure of what is the best for her. She will also have to have at least one tooth pulled so I am at a crossroad. |
Kyra was barely 6 months. |
I know they can start as early as 6 months but I'm not sure the longest they can go. they usually have 2 heats a year. There is supposed to be swelling and red discharge in the 1st stage of heat. that said I'm not sure how much swelling, and some dogs are supposed to keep themselves really clean. I'm not sure how noticeable it is. Highdee If you're considering breeding be sure you read up on it. I thought it would be neat when I first started looking for a yorkie mostly because I love the idea of having puppies around, but changed my mine when I read about the risks and what all went into it. I decided I just wasn't up for that... I know a lot more goes into it than I would have though. I'm not a breeder but from what I remember you aren't supposed to breed the 1st heat, and from what I've read on spaying spaying before the 2nd heat greatly reduces the chances of certain types of cancer in dogs. There is a lot of great information here :) |
Thank you for the information and I will definitely take all into consideration.:animal36 |
Females can go into heat as early as 6mths and sometimes as late as 13months old. She will go into heat most likely in the next month or two. After heat finishes you usually wait 6wks before doing any spay surgery. Start now to feel and see and get used to the look of your females vulva. Some females are very very clean, and especially with small dogs you might not notice any blood. How-ever there will always be swelling and some discharge. Also personality and or appetite changes are frequent as well. Here is my advise, if you are not sure what to look for, then from now on "assume" your female is in heat. That means keep her away from any un neutered males. Walk her only on lead, and if you have a fenced in backyard, go out with her when you let her out to potty. If you have un-neutered males in the house, you will have to crate and rotate!. Means that the female is not allowed out when the male is. Exercise separately and potty separately. |
My yorkie didn't go into heat until about a year. It just depends n the dog. |
Thanks everyone. I think she will be ok until after Christmas. Vet said I may not even notice the first heat since it will be so light. She potty`s inside on pads. No other dogs. When we go to Petsmart etc. , she is in her stroller. |
